Job Description

This is for a PRN position that will fill in for our 6 WIC offices
when needed.  Our offices are located in: Jeffersonville, Scottsburg,
Hanover, Seymour, North Vernon and Columbus.

The WIC Health Professional I is responsible for completing certification testing, nutrition assessments, nutrition education, referrals, SOAP care plans, and food package issuance in an efficient manner for all participants. Participant centered interviewing that relies on strong professional listening skills and assisting participants in establishing self-identified health goals.



1. Present a friendly and warm welcome to all families upon clinic visits and telephone contacts; display of excellent eye contact with families; offer a minimum of one compliment to families at each clinic visit or telephone contact

2. Client Certification Duties
a. Perform certification testing and nutrition assessment on all clients
b. Cross-train to assist in clerical duties when necessary
c. Establish a rapport with clients that puts families at ease and encourages clients to select a minimum of one nutrition or health related goal over the certification period
d. Calibration, maintenance, cleaning, arranging annual state inspection for medical equipment
e. Responsible for certification of clients in an efficient and timely fashion
f. Provision of general health and nutrition information
g. Finger/toe sticks for hemoglobin testing
h. Referral to appropriate health and community services
i. Scheduling of second nutrition education contacts
j. Assignment of client food packages
k. Observation of developmental milestones and appropriate referrals as necessary
l. Correspondence with client physician when required
m. Development of SOAP notes for each client and ALERT documentation on date services provided
n. Encouragement of Breastfeeding
o. Explanation of risk factor and health consequences
p. Adhere to Universal Precaution practices at all times
q. Communicating with Clinic Manager medical supply needs
r. Application of bleach solution for infection control

3. Establish a rapport with clients that puts the families at ease and encourages clients to select a minimum of one nutrition or health related goal over the certification period

4. Ensure a monthly participation rate for WIC at or above the state average

5. Maintain an average show rate of 80% or higher and appointment slots are 100% filled on a daily basis

6. Assist in caseload growth and maintenance

7. Assist in implementing outreach plans

8. Completion of time studies in October and April

9. Attend and complete in-services on: Universal Precautions and Civil Rights Training

Job Requirements


1. Basic computer knowledge

2. Experience working in public health, pediatrics, and or obstetrics


1. Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Nursing or related field with minimum of 9 hours in nutrition courses required

2. Registered Dietitian or Registered Nurse with a valid license preferred

3. Bilingual Spanish/English skills preferred
