A Clinical Data Engineer (CDE) develops, implements or supports at least one of the following CCL(Cerner Command Language),Reporting, Discern Analytics Reporting, Event Set Hierarchy, Discern Rules and Alerts for all applications associated with the enterprise Clinical System. The goals for support and development are aligned directly with the Clinical data needs of our facilities.

The Clinical Data Engineer is responsible for analyzing data from the Lights On Network® in order to monitor and improve system performance and stability, provided adoption and efficiency in addition to monitoring solution build best practices. The Clinical Data Engineer projects can range from small functionality enhancements for one user to a broad user base that transform and optimize the process of an entire Clinical area. The Clinical Data Engineer works closely with clinical staff for all applications including both in-house application level subject matter experts and the Clinicians at our facilities. A CDE is visible internal spokesperson for all Clinical Reports, Lights On Network® data analytics, Rules and Alerts including educating both internal and external customers on the design logic for any Clinical Reports, Rules or Alerts.

The Associate Clinical Data Engineer is responsible to understand and apply technology tools, systems, policies and processes that are required to ensure the protection of Adventist Health System data assets, Protected Health Information (PHI) and all forms of personal identity information.

This position will perform all procedures necessary for the secure operation, reliability and integrity of any data provided to our facilities or vendors across multiple Clinical applications. This will include development, implementation, standardized coding documentation, appropriate testing techniques, structured troubleshooting techniques and quality assurance processes. The Associate Clinical Data Engineer is responsible for evaluating system responsiveness and in assisting to target areas for improvement, reviewing crashes, database metrics and back-end server metrics via Lights On Network® while adhering to company policies and procedures in regard to data transmissions, development or maintenance requests.

The Associate CDE will work directly with the user community and Clinical application teams to develop guidelines, processes, and infrastructure to accommodate user data needs. Knowledge of change control policies and procedures are required to ensure that the user community understands the necessary procedures to maintain best practices for delivering requested data needs. The CDE will evaluate the impact at the environment level of a code upgrade or solution adoption. The CDE will conduct routine code auditing and evaluations as requested and provide management with appropriate assessments and recommendations. The CDE will assist in the auditing of new and existing code to ensure that appropriate controls exist, that processing is efficient and accurate, and that all coding standards and procedures are in compliance with corporate and industry recognized standards.

Job Requirements


• Basic Microsoft suite experience required

• Clinical Systems application/Implementation experience preferred.
• 1-3+ years of clinical/technical background preferred
• Knowledge of clinical/Technical workflow preferred


• Yearly participation in ongoing education either formal or through conferences, active professional organization participation, or journal presentations.
• Completion of one professional certification within three years and maintenance of certification thereafter if applicable.

• College Degree (AS, Diploma, B.A., B.S. or similar) in a field of study such as business, IS, or a healthcare related area preferred.
