Job Description

TB Wood's Inc., a Division of Altra Industrial Motion is currently seeking a CNC Programmer for our facility in Chambersburg, PA.

Job Summary: Plan the programs that automate machine tools by means of computer generated electronic data.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Read three-dimensional computer-aided/automated design (CAD) blueprints, determine where to cut, and other calculations.
  • Translate instructions into a computer aided/automated manufacturing program (CAM).
  • Write programs or modify existing programs and store them on the machine's controller using tapes or disks.
  • Analyze job orders, drawings, blueprints and other data.
  • Determine the sequence of machine operations, and select the proper cutting tools needed to machine workpieces into the desired shapes.
  • Revise programs or tapes to eliminate errors, and retest programs to check that problems have been solved.
  • Analyze job orders, drawings, blueprints, specifications, printed circuit board pattern films, and design data to calculate dimensions, tool selection, machine speeds, and feed rates.
  • Write instruction sheets and cutter lists for a machine's controller to guide setup and encode numerical control tapes.
  • Observe machines on trial runs or conduct computer simulations to ensure that programs and machinery will function properly and produce items that meet specifications.
  • Enter computer commands to store or retrieve parts patterns, graphic displays, or programs that transfer data to other media.
  • Determine reference points, machine cutting paths, or hole locations, and compute angular and linear dimensions, radii, and curvatures.
  • Sort shop orders into groups to maximize materials utilization and minimize machine setup time.
  • Compare encoded tapes or computer printouts with original part specifications and blueprints to verify accuracy of instructions.
  • Draw machine tool paths on pattern film, using colored markers and following guidelines for tool speed and efficiency.
  • Enter coordinates of hole locations into program memories by depressing pedals or buttons of programmers.
  • Align and secure pattern film on reference tables of optical programmers, and observe enlarger scope views of printed circuit boards.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Technical understanding of TBW products and the power transmission industry.
  • Knowledge and experience with CAD and MasterCAM software.
  • Reading comprehension and knowledge of mathematics.
  • Demonstrates ability to write computer programs.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in use of measurement tools (calipers and micrometers).

Job Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Technical Certificate or equivalent preferred
  • 3-5 years related experience preferred

 

Working Conditions:

  • Normal machine shop environment
  • Must wear personal protective equipment at all times
  • Noise – Frequent exposure to noise levels at or above 85 decibels during shift. Hearing protection required.
  • Dust – Regular exposure to dust particles. Proper PPE required, when needed.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting Requirements – Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Bending, Kneeling and Squatting – Must be able to bend, kneel and/or squat during course of shift.
  • Standing – Must be able to stand, potentially for long periods of time, during shift.
  • Arm-Hand Steadiness —Must be able to keep hand and arm steady while moving arm or while holding arm and hand in one position.
  • Finger Dexterity — Must be able to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
  • Manual Dexterity — Must be able to quickly move hand, hand together with arm, or two hands to grasp and/or manipulate objects.
  • Control Precision — Must be able to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
  • Near Vision — Must be able to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer)
  • Hearing Sensitivity — The ability to detect or tell the differences between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness
