Job Title:       Driveshaft Operator

Department: Production

Reports to:    Area Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt/Hourly


SUMMARY:   Guardian Couplings is seeking a Driveshaft Operator in Michigan City, IN. Under minimal supervision, this individual performs the duties of setting up and operating numerically controlled and conventional machine tools within the machining area, producing a variety of diversified finished parts.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Operates CNC Lathe and manual Milling equipment.
  • Works from standard and complex drawings, instruction sheets, charts and/or verbal instructions.
  • Works to close tolerance on unusual operational requirements, as necessary.
  • Analyzes and adjusts or corrects controls, tools and fixtures to maintain quality levels during production.
  • Sets up and stages product for the Driveshaft Machinist.
  • Keeps all related equipment in proper storage within work location.
  • Performs routine daily maintenance on equipment in assigned cell.
  • Operates manual work transporting equipment within machining area.
  • Upon completion of operation, transfer to next operation using available material handling equipment.
  • Keeps machines, equipment and general work area neat and orderly.
  • Applies the principles of ABS (LEAN Manufacturing) in accordance with Policy Deployment.
  • Applies multi-tasking skills often by operating multiple machines in a cell environment.
  • Skills required include and are not limited to:  turning, milling, broaching, sawing, grinding and drilling and tapping.
  • Supports a safe work place environment.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.

  • Ability to read and understand complex blueprints.
  • Basic GD&T knowledge.
  • Proficient in set-up and operation of all shop equipment
  • Good understanding in use all micrometers and measuring instruments required to produce quality parts.  Also, make any calculations required to setup and operate equipment properly.
  • Simple spray painting ability
  • Must be able to replace universal joints
  • Specifically, within GD&T knowledge must be able to:
    1. measuring drive shaft angles and phasing
    2. measuring run-out of drive shaft
    3. balancing drive shaft
    4. replacing slip spline.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance and over 50 lbs. with assistance.
  • Must be willing to work on a team.
  • Must be able to stand up to 10 hours per day. 
  • Must be able to work to customer demand rates in a fast paced environment and meet production goals.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen and background check.
  • Must be willing to work overtime as required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required.  Manufacturing Technology AAS, diploma from an accredited school or 2 years related experience preferred.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Must have the ability to read and write English.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Must be able to perform complex arithmetical calculations.
