Senior Strategic Buyer – TB Wood’s (Chambersburg, PA

The Senior Strategic Buyer position is responsible for developing sound global-wide procurement strategies for a low volume/high product mix. This role will have a strategic focus only and have responsibility to drive cost reductions while maintaining focus on product quality and delivery, in order to meet organizational goals and objectives.


  • Define and implement a strategic sourcing process to meet company objectives, while obtaining maximum value from suppliers.
  • Identify new suppliers, select the correct sourcing strategy and use strategic Purchasing skills to complete assigned projects and commodity sourcing assignments.
  • Responsible for all commercial relationships with suppliers for assigned projects and commodity areas, securing targeted levels of cost, quality, delivery precision, sustainability, and manage the total lifecycle of a supplier contract, including submission to legal, expiration alerts, etc.
  • Interpret, forecast, and report on market trends and specific supplier issues to ensure materials and services are purchased at the most competitive price and delivered on time for production.

  • Analyze historical procurement data in order to conduct detailed demand, spend, cost and market analyses resulting in a structured approach to tendering and negotiating with suppliers.

  • Perform vendor visits internationally to qualify, negotiate, resolve quality issues, and expedite. Such visits may be at short notice.

  • Must possess knowledge of and stay up with current economic conditions and market forecasts in setting terms and negotiating supply agreements as appropriate.

  • Searches import/export data for intelligence on competitors and suppliers.

  • Evaluates supplier inventory and warehouse records to determine if material on hand is in sufficient quantity and manufacturing capacity to determine capabilities to meet agreement expectations.

Job Requirements


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Materials or Business Management or equivalent required
  • 10 years of previous purchasing experience required
  • 5 years strategic sourcing experience, including international purchasing and contract negotiation required
  • Prior experience in sourcing iron or steel castings required
  • Prior knowledge and experience with continuous improvement tools (lean manufacturing techniques, rates based planning, Kanban replenishment, etc.) is preferred.
  • Willing to travel internationally up to 50% of the time, and at times with short notice required
  • APICS or ISM (CPIM or CPM) certifications preferred
  • Spend experience of $5M-$10M, including international vendors.
