Special Education Teacher - As a teacher in our nonpublic day school serving Special Education students in grades 6-12 with emotional and behavioral disorders, you will provide case management for nine students who have not been successful in a public school setting. With the help of assistant teachers, you'll make a positive and effective impact by implementing accommodations and modifications to county and state curriculum to meet the diverse needs of each learner. You'll also participate as an active member of the Treatment Team to develop an overall strategy to help each child succeed in reaching their full potential. This position requires expertise in implementing curriculum for Middle School and High School level. This position requires proficiency and knowledge of the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards and the ability to motivate each student to achieve to their highest potential.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING

  • Maintains a safe learning environment for students within the scope of the Arrow Center for Education administrative policies and procedures. Supervises and manages student behavior in the classroom, school and school-sponsored functions.
  • Maintains proper rules, safety and security of students, providing crisis intervention when necessary.
  • Shares/transmits the mission and vision of Arrow Child & Family Ministries to staff and to students and families served.
  • Perform all duties within contract, state and federal regulations, Arrow policy, COA, and NCASES standards.


Supervisory responsibilities

This position directly supervises staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Arrow Child & Family Ministries policies, State and Federal laws and policy and procedures. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance including coaching and future performance development; manages training needs through learning management system; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Maintain quality improvement goals and address at regularly scheduled staff meetings.

Education, Licensure and/or Experience

Bachelor's Degree and a valid (issued) State Department of Education Teaching Certificate or eligible and willing to obtain the certificate. At least one (1) year of teaching experience in special education with emotionally disturbed students preferred.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside the ministry.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with occasional variables.

Other Requirements
  • Must have valid driver's licence.
  • Must proof of current auto registration, inspection, and insurance.
  • Driving Record (three years) form the state in which the driver's license is valid.
  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must submit to and pass random drug tests during employment.
  • Must successfully pass all background screens as required by the state.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.

The employee is also regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may have occasional contact with cleaning solvents, aromatics and nuisance dusts. Some locations may require PCM (Professional Crisis Management) Training.

Other physical requirements specific to this job: Required to stand up to 8 hours a day. Occasionally required to lift/carry up to 50 lbs. Occasionally required to push/pull up to 50 lbs. Occasionally required to climb stairs. Occasionally required to bend, stoop, crouch or required to stand from a kneeling position, with both knees down, 5 times in one minute
