Inpatient Coder - Health Information Management, Full Time/Days (RHIA/RHIT/CCS Required)

Health Information Management (HIM) reports to Finance at BJH. HIM is a multifaceted department supporting patient care areas as well as administrative departments with 24/7operations. HIM also processes public/patient and payer requests concerning medical records. HIM department has 3 locations: 2 on the North Campus of Barnes-Jewish Hospital for record processing and 1 satellite office on the south campus for physician documentation support and record requests. HIM offers a variety of positions from entry level clerical to Coding, Clinical Documentation Specialist and administrative support positions. HIM employment opportunities include Release of Information (ROI), Scanning, Phone Desk (Reception), Discharge Analysis and more. Role Purpose

Assigns diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-9 and CPT classifications in compliance with regulatory agency guidelines. Reports to Coding Supervisor.


  • Assigns codes for all primary and secondary diagnoses and procedures.
  • Ensures completeness and quality of record coding.
  • Queries physician for clarification or additional information as requested.
  • Meets production standards for number of records coded and abstracted.
