Job Description

Westmoreland Coal Company is seeking a Senior Payroll Specialist with current payroll experience to support processing timely and accurate bi-weekly payrolls for our facilities in Alberta and Saskatchewan.  The incumbent will perform a wide variety of payroll processing activities to support outlying locations in entering time information to create correct paychecks for each employee. Produces timely and accurate payroll, month end and year end reports; including T-4's and all year-end processes.  Assists employees and/or managers with questions about payroll policies, pay discrepancies, and resolving benefit deduction issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:            

  • Work with remote locations to gather timecard entries and process related data into automated payroll system.  Provide locations with reports to verify payroll related information.  Once complete, process payroll through final entries, generate and submit banking information, GL transactions, tax entries and all applicable benefits reports to appropriate business partners.
  • Audit payroll records, research and resolve imbalances, and run adjustments as needed.
  • Process special pays, adjustments, manual checks, and involuntary terminations in association with remote locations as needed.
  • Work with benefits providers and team members in the Benefits department to identify and resolve issues.
  • Support benefits team members in US office with projects as needed.
  • Maintain payroll operations and ensure SOX compliance by following policies and procedures; reporting needed changes.
  • Responsible for gathering payroll information for special reports, accounting, audit, unions, quarterly T-4 balancing.
  • Assist Global Payroll Manager in US Corporate office in identifying payroll operations process improvements.
  • Generate management reports as needed.
  • Remain updated on payroll and tax changes.

Job Requirements

  • 4 to 6 years of relevant payroll and general accounting experience. CPM/PCP certification strongly preferred.
  • Performs work under minimal supervision.
  • Must have experience with year-end reporting and processing T-4’s.
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Handles complex issues and problems, and refers only the most complex issues to higher-level staff.
  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of payroll, computerized application and systems; JD Edwards, ADP and/or Kronos preferred.  Proficiency with MS Office, spreadsheets and database applications software preferred.
