Job Description

Corporate Counsel will be part of the Westmoreland North American legal team, reporting to the Associate General Counsel, and will act as a legal adviser to the US operations team and mine sites. The successful candidate will have experience in counseling business partners in contractual, employment, land operations, regulatory, and health/safety matters, with a background in mining or the natural resources industry considered advantageous, but not required. The ability to effectively manage a large volume and wide variety of legal issues is essential. The successful candidate will be joining a small legal team that places importance on the “work hard, play hard" mentality.

  • Assisting with US legal activities, including land operations, environmental, permitting, employment, regulatory, litigation, and health and safety matters.
  • Negotiating, reviewing, and drafting a wide variety of agreements, including joint venture agreements, purchase and sale agreements, NDA/confidentiality agreements, and other contractual instruments related to company’s mining operations.
  • Working with outside counsel and managing external legal projects.
  • Working with local, state and federal agencies on regulatory matters.
  • Providing legal oversight of the permitting process for various US projects.
  • Providing proactive counsel and support to ensure operations compliance with local, state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Managing and directing litigation.
  • Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct.
  • Consistently exercises sound judgment in job performance.

Job Requirements

  • J.D. degree from an accredited U.S. or Canadian law school.
  • At least 2-3 years of related work experience, preferably in the natural resources or mining industry.
  • Required current and active licensure status in Colorado.
  • Ability to travel overnight occasionally throughout the United States and Canada. 

Relocation will not be provided for this position.
