Job Description

Directly supervise Plant Operations` personnel to achieve shift production in a safe, economical manner within the statutory requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Mines and Environmental Regulations. Responsible for ensuring the plant activities are performed safely, efficiently and in a cost effective manner that meets the needs of both the customer and the Company.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administer activities to ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures and union bargaining unit agreement.
  • Coordinate and direct work activities for daily operation of the plant and to effectively implement maintenance plans, ensuring safe work behaviors and practices.
  • Ensure effective coal quality control procedures are used; coordinate safe plant activities to maximize equipment availability and provide for preventive and scheduled maintenance in order to maximize availability.
  • Analyze operational/maintenance requirements and adjust priorities as required.
  • Communicate status of work activities as needed with department manager or other departments.
  • Directly supervise, deploy personnel and plan for the operations of the plant based on weekly plans, production targets and requirements of customer using quality standards and safe, efficient, environmentally acceptable mining practices.
  • Carry out regular safety and environmental inspections of all areas to ensure that operations are being carried out in a safe and environmentally responsible manner in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, the Mines Regulations, the Environmental Regulations and addressing any concerns as soon as possible.
  • Prepare and complete the necessary plant documents (crew line up to optimize production, absent forms, time sheets, shift reports, etc.
  • Communicate and acts on pre and post shift activities.
  • Follow-up with employees off for illness and/or injury as per Company policies and procedures.
  • Actively manage and develop the performance of employees, using consistent performance management and communications techniques.
  • Maintain appropriate records of any employee performance issues and take the necessary corrective action in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Co-ordinate crew training efforts in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, Environmental Regulations, utilizing resources available and evaluate progress and competency. Ensure training documentation is completed.
  • Other related duties as required.

Job Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related degree; or the equivalent combination of work experience and related associates degree.  
  • Minimum of 5 years of coal processing and plant experience with 1 year of supervision or directing others. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of operation and maintenance functions. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer applications, maintenance management software, and Microsoft standard office programs. 
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact with other supervisors, professionals, representatives and departmental staff from within and outside the company.
  • Successful candidate must be able to obtain a Mine Foreman Certification.
