Clinical Supervisor is responsible for direct supervision ofnursing and Hospice Aides. Participates in administrative after hour on-callrotation and assisting the Director of Patient Care Services with oversight ofpatient services and daily clinical operations.


  • Participates in the hiring, orientation, and on-going training of new nursing and home health aide staff.
  • Responsible for timely completion of monthly scheduling calendars for Admission nurses; full-time, part-time, per diem and on-call nursing and home health staff.
  • Ensures RN coverage for weekends and holidays. Approves vacation, holiday, and leave requests based on staffing needs and in accordance with personnel policies and procedures. Reviews for accuracy and approves all time sheets for nurses and home health aide personnel
  • Oversees daily and weekly RN and CHHA staffing and visit scheduling to ensure that all appropriate patient needs are met and that the staff workload is distributed appropriately.
  • Oversees nursing compliance with state regulations and agency policies and procedures in the nursing supervision of home health aides every two weeks.
  • Meets regularly with nursing and home health aide staff, individually and collectively, to discuss agency or personnel issues or problems. Provides professional and clinical support and exchanges feedback continually aimed toward enhancing professional growth.
  • Performs annual evaluations, including some in home evaluations, of all RN and CHHA staff according to the personnel policies and procedures. Appropriately counsels employees in areas of poor performance or needed improvement, and reviews written records of this counseling promptly with the Director of Human Resources. Ensures that timely and appropriate follow-up is provided for all counseling per Policies and Procedures.
  • Makes home visits as staffing issues dictate.
  • Works with Director of Patient Care Services in reviewing bills to insure cost effective ordering of medical supplies and medications.
  • Perform admissions when necessary.
  • Triage patient/family calls in a timely manner.
  • Promotes and supports the interdisciplinary team through effective collaboration and planning.
  • Demonstrates understanding of patient eligibility requirements for hospice care, including working knowledge of guidelines for Determining Terminal Status based on Local Coverage Determination’s (LCD’s) Medical Review Policy and Palliative Performance Scale (PPS).
  • Assure proper maintenance of clinical records in compliance with local, state and federal laws.
  • Participates in the orientation program for new hospice staff, ensuring direct reports receive proper orientation.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement activities as appropriate.

Job Requirements

  • Must have current California licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing with the State Board, and be CPR certified.
  • A graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BS in Nursing preferred.
  • Three (3) nursing experience, preferably in a hospice, home health agency or acute; minimum one (1) year in hospice care or home care required.
  • One (1) year supervisory experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Demonstrative ability to supervise and direct professional and administrative personnel.
  • Clinical expertise in care of terminally ill patients, including pain and symptom management.
  • Excellent observation skills.
  • Ability to communicate well in English (spoken & written) is required. Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
  • Ability to take initiative and make appropriate independent work decisions is required.
  • Knowledge of palliative and/or terminal care, including effective pain and symptom control techniques, and preparation of a patient and family for coping with the psychosocial component of a terminal illness and the impending death is required.
  • Previous experience in effective supervision of the work of others is required, and previous supervision of clinical health care staff is preferred.
  • Knowledge of group process and ability to facilitate an interdisciplinary team approach to patient care is required.
  • Must be able to demonstrate conflict-management skills based on fostering open communication, equal respect for self and others, and acceptance of responsibility for the consequences of one’s own behaviors and actions.
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions, and ability to prioritize and complete many different duties and projects, some under tight deadlines, is required.
  • Knowledge of Medicare Hospice Conditions of Participation, Medi-Cal hospice services, Private Insurance hospice services, and California Hospice Licensing requirements, a plus.
  • Computer literacy is required. Skills in internet use, access database use, and/or Excel spreadsheets preferred.
  • Ability to successfully meet agency background screening requirements.


  • Able to hear, speak, read, write, and type well enough to perform required job duties.
  • Able to lift up to 35 pounds without physical problems.
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license and state-required automobile insurance if driving on Yolo Hospice business.
  • Must be willing and able to flex hours to meet legitimate program needs during evenings or weekends, and be available for on-call supervisor duties.
  • Physically able to make home visits and perform CPR.
  • This position is classified as exempt from overtime.
