Job Description

 Posiition Summary 

The Micron Gearheads product line is moving from Amherst, NY to the Boston Gear facility in Charlotte, NC by late September and we will be adding local design engineering support. Until the transition is completed, the incumbent will need to be available for heavy travel (multiple weeks in a row) for training on product and working with the design engineer in NY.

This position is responsible for mechanical engineering and design for the Micron brand of gearheads as well as customized OEM projects.  Responsibilities will include detailed design work, new product development, component design, testing and evaluation and failure analysis.  There is also an emphasis on project management. The Design Engineer is also required to work closely with the commercial team, manufacturing, suppliers, and the end customer. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Utilize engineering skills to maintain and improve existing product designs as well as drive innovation and new product development, including design and analysis of new gearing solutions that expand product offerings.
  • Develop and perform functional and performance testing in a laboratory setting, providing comprehensive written reports, for product validation and competitive analyses. Build and test prototypes of new designs and provide documented test procedures for design verification.
  • Manage all stages of product life cycle from concept through design, prototyping, launch, production support, changes and obsolescence.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation (models, drawings, specifications, etc.).
  • Provide technical support to other departments as required. This includes, but is not limited to: Sales, Customer Service, Product Management, Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Quality Assurance, etc.
  • Determine root cause of product and process failures and provide reports in conjunction with other departments as required.
  • Develop and maintain the bills of materials and product configuration systems for all product lines.
  • Support Purchase Price Variance (PPV) and Value Engineering Value Analysis (VAVE) efforts as a technical resource/project lead.
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering data (performance ratings and dimensions) that will be used in product literature.
  • Assist in developing and implementing initiatives for improving the efficiency of Boston Gear’s processes. Actively participate in Lean Manufacturing activities.
  • Represent the company with periodic customer or vendor site visits as required.

Job Requirements

Critical Competencies

US Citizen, Permanent Resident or Green Card holder is required for ITAR compliance

  • Knowledge of power transmission components and gear/gear box design as well as manufacturing and assembly principles and applications is strongly preferred.
  • Creativity with demonstrated ability to develop innovative solutions from a blank sheet.
  • Proficient with performing math calculations to include algebra, calculus and trigonometry. A good understanding of statistical methods and interpretation is preferred.
  • Advanced level proficiency with MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). Knowledge of CAD (Solid Works preferred), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and SAP is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking skills, including the ability to collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions where limited standardization or information exists.
  • Strong project management and exceptional organization skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to adapt to internal processes and change, delays or unexpected events.
  • Able to respond to stressful work situations, adversity, and/or restrictions of the organization with emotional fortitude, resilience, and tenacity.
  • Willing and able to occasionally travel (5-10%) to domestic and international locations for customer, vendor or other Altra sites, including attendance at off-site meetings, trade show events and professional development conferences or seminars.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field
  • Minimum 5 or more years of practical design experience is required. Design experience with gear/gearbox design, rotating equipment or other similar machinery is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with troubleshooting and root cause analysis is required.
  • Experience and/or training with lean manufacturing principles is preferred
