Job Description

The Design Engineering Manager is a key member of the Engineering staff and has responsibility for leading the Design Engineering team of Standard Products at the Rock Road facility. The position reports to the Director of Engineering. The Engineering team consists of Design Engineers, Designers, and other Engineering documentation specialists.  Currently the team size is about 10 people.

The individual will play a critical role on the Engineering team to guide the design work regarding Quality, Delivery, Cost, and Compliance.  The role partners with other functional areas to ensure the Engineering department is meeting the needs of internal and external Customers. 

This role will be joining the Kollmorgen team in Radford, VA.  Kollmorgen is part of Altra (AIMC).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Along with those identified below, other duties may be assigned.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Makes resourcing decisions/assignments of Design Engineering staff to support the needs of internal and external Customers
  • Through quality development plans builds the Design Engineering Team.
  • Maintain and manage KPI (Key Performance Indicators) metrics for the group.  Typical metrics are Engineering release On-time Delivery, Engagement activities, Engineering Change Order backlog, Value Engineering projects, Cost Analyses, and other metrics depending on business needs.
  • May provide expert consultation in one or more areas for the design, development, and implementation of technical products and systems. 
  • Relies on extensive experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Demonstrates a broad range of expertise in a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Recommends alterations and product development needs in the area managed.
  • Supports Value Engineering efforts including execution and identification of impactful projects.
  • Responsible for compliance to various agency needs such as UL, CE, CSA, etc.
  • Supports Continuous Improvement activity individually and with Engineering resources as appropriate.
  • Manages Engineering Change Control and participates in establishing and improving the ISO Procedures and Departmental procedures.
  • Minimal travel is required. Must be available to travel to domestic and international locations as needed to visit Suppliers, Customers, and other Company locations/ functions (<10% of time).

Job Requirements

Critical Competencies

  • Experience serving as the Technical Lead and/or Project Manager of significant successful Development projects.
  • Actively champions Altra Business System (ABS) tools
  • Prior experience in a Supervisory role is a plus
  • Experience of serving as a Product Engineer is preferred.
  • Demonstrated engineering analytical capability.
  • Technical knowledge and experience in electric motors or similar technologies
  • Technical knowledge of electric motor manufacturing processes or similar technologies.
  • Experience with CAD/ CAE tools preferred.
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Excellent problem- solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Demonstrated successful Customer interaction history.
  • Team player
  • Enjoys working with and developing a team of Design Engineering staff with varying levels of experience; providing career development opportunities and mentorship to advance technical and personal/behavior skills.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, MS preferred
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in the field or related area
