Job Description

The Production Manager is responsible for the value stream activities as applied to the manufacture of gearbox units for industrial applications. The Production Manager is the operations and project leader for the assigned product(s) and processes and is expected to optimize process efficiency through facilitation of direct and indirect support groups across the overall supply chain from start to finish. The position will provide hands-on leadership for improvement activities and maintenance of all key performance indicators relative to the value stream.

The position will report into the Value Stream Manager and will have responsibility for supervising a small team of hourly assemblers in addition to collaborating with the Project Manager to execute and implement process and technical engineering initiatives in that support growth objectives in the U.S.

  • Lead and manage the people, production processes, and initiatives for the designated value stream. This includes executing department goals that align with strategic business objectives; planning, scheduling, and monitoring activities that achieve these results; directing hourly personnel in their responsibilities so that customer orders are fulfilled, and quality and delivery requirements are met or exceeded.
  • Manage component and finished goods inventory, to include decisions on stocking levels to support business and on-time delivery objectives.
  • Promote and implement lean manufacturing principles and initiatives that drive continuous improvements in safety, quality, delivery, and cost, following the Altra Business System (ABS) tools and methods. Actively participate in and assume leadership role in Kaizen events to execute strategic objectives for the value stream.
  • Build organizational capability through the coaching and mentoring of value stream team members. Develop talent and empower resources to create innovative solutions for achieving results. Drive recruitment and performance management initiatives while inspiring the team to exceed expectations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional resources that impact and support the value stream, to include but not limited to: Design Engineering, Product Management, Manufacturing Engineering, IT, and global resources to convert customer specifications into a functional product that aligns with business objectives, quality requirements, and cost objectives.
  • Manage warranty and service/repair work related to the value stream, to include but not limited to: interfacing with the customer and establishing a consistent cost structure for repair and/or replacement orders.
  • Evaluate production and quality problems, provide guidance and assistance with resolving issues, and facilitate actions to implement permanent corrective actions, including technical support and instruction for new manufacturing procedures.
  • Analyze and plan workforce utilization, manpower planning, workflow, and design of equipment layout and workspace for maximum efficiency.
  • Display commitment to customers and internal stakeholders by proactively communicating, taking ownership of risks/issues, and facilitating effective outcomes in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with Company policies at both the corporate and local level, Altra’s Quality Management System, as well as and state and federal OSHA regulations and the plant’s Safety Policy to facilitate a safe working environment.
  • Responsible for all administrative tasks associated with the department such as budgets, presentations, metrics tracking and reporting, performance management, and other responsibilities as assigned.


Job Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree is required in Engineering or a relevant technical discipline. An advanced degree is a plus.


  • 5 or more years of progressive work experience in an operations and/or business leader role is required, including supervision of an hourly production workforce.
  • Track record with leading, driving, and sustaining successful lean manufacturing initiatives, to include hands-on experience with leading Kaizen events and applying Toyota Production System or similar continuous improvement methods and tools is strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience working in a multi-national organization is preferred.
  • Prior experience working in gear engineering, electric motors or metal-cutting manufacturing industry is preferred.

  • Technical aptitude, to include proficiency with reading and understanding blueprints, mechanical drawings, and schematics is required. A strong understanding of gear and gear box design principles, as well as knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes, and machinery or similar rotating equipment is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing methods, techniques, and related equipment, production scheduling, and manufacturing operations requirements is required.
  • Effective interpersonal skills that fosters teamwork and collaboration with cross-functional resources and departments and develops high quality working relationships in order to influence, gain support, and achieve results. This includes a strong cooperation with production, engineering, sales and materials, as well as external customers and vendors.
  • Strong analytical ability to recognize need for modification of procedures or processes, identify root cause, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions where limited standardization or information exists.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking skills, including having a continuous improvement mindset and an advocate for change. This includes the ability to work with demanding and changing schedules, pressure for maximum output, solving varied and complex production problems requiring original and technical approaches and/or coordination with other departments.
  • Highly productive with a strong sense of urgency and orientation to details, accuracy, and excellent outcomes.
  • Results-oriented with a demonstrated ability to be self-directed and self-motivated, effectively manage time and multiple priorities, and meet deliverables in a timely manner.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills, including the ability to simplify and communicate complex topics to hourly and/or non-technical team members.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, including a demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet critical deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Innovative and open-minded, including a demonstrated willingness to continually learn and search for ideas and opportunities to further develop the product categories.
  • Willingness to be flexible and adapt to changes in internal processes, delays or unexpected events in order to meet daily customer demand and on time delivery requirements, including performing any task required to meet department objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle proprietary and sensitive information with integrity.
  • Demonstrated safety orientation and compliance mindset.
  • Proficient at the intermediate to advanced level in MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint). Knowledge of SAP is desired.
  • Willing and able to work extended hours (including weekends) as required to support manufacturing needs.
  • Willing and able to occasionally travel domestically and internationally to other Altra sites, vendor and/or customer locations, training events, trade shows, etc.
