Job Description

The Supplier Quality Engineer will be responsible for planning and directing improvement activities of current processes, equipment, materials, products, and suppliers that will allow us to meet our customers quality and delivery requirements in a team environment.  The SQE will have full ownership for the quality of each external supplier (high cost region and low cost region).

This position will be joining the Portescap team in West Chester, PA.  Portescap is part of Altra (AIMC).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Along with those identified below, other duties may be assigned. 

  • Through the process of formal and informal production audits/ operator feedback and data analysis, recognize quality concerns and address them by developing and implementing a sustainable solution that can be tracked by quantifiable results for the St Kitts operations facility.
  • Performs external audits on all suppliers, existing and new, including the review of ISO criteria for new suppliers.
  • Interact with non-conforming suppliers to ensure corrective actions are being developed and implemented in a timely fashion to ensure quality components are delivered on time.
  • Track supplier performance ensuring all suppliers are meeting a 98% acceptance rate or above.
  • Provide score cards to all suppliers in order to track and maintain quality data.
  • Maintain the approved supplier list, including the determination of qualified suppliers and new supplier qualification.
  • Champion the company’s culture/ core values (teamwork, continuous improvement, performance measurement, integrity, personal responsibility).
  • Define receipt inspection criteria including AQL, dimensional, aesthetics, etc.
  • Facilitate process improvements at suppliers using lean tools such as kaizen.
  • Define inspection process and method to be used by suppliers to ensure inspection procedures are consistent.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Internal: The Supplier Quality Engineer, West Chester will report directly to the Quality Manager and will have a matrix reporting relationship to the Operations Manager.
  • External: Other Corporate and Division associates, Company Customer and Supplier Base.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; will consider additional years' experience in place of degree.
  • At least one year of manufacturing experience; 5 or more years experience preferred.
  • Prior experience with utilizing lean methodology is preferred.
  • Experience in metal working operations.
  • Experience with QS and ISO is required.
  • Ability to travel domestically 10% + of the time.

A STRONG CANDIDATE WILL POSSES:

  • Strong written, verbal and computer skills.
  • Experience designing and implementing error-proofing devices and systems in manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing tools.
  • Excellent communications and instruction skills.
  • Familiarity with various technical manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in time and project management.
