Our Approach
  • Kollmorgen Internship Program provides an accelerated training and professional development for college students who wish to pursue a career in Manufacturing, Design, Sales, or Product Development.  The program will give students the opportunity to get exposed to the various facets of Kollmorgen’s lean manufacturing environment.  The Program will build on your technical skills by providing you a role with significant responsibility as well as exposure to experienced business leaders, mentors, and subject matter experts.
  • Based upon the success of the internship, the Intern will be offered a full-time position with Kollmorgen.
  • Likely assignments can include Manufacturing Engineer, Quality Engineer, Applications Engineer, Sourcing Engineer and Test & Automation Engineer.
  • Below is a description of a few of these potential assignments. Selection of the assignment will involve the participant’s preference, availability of the assignment, and the needs of the organization.  The specific responsibilities within each assignment may vary based upon the immediate needs of the business. 
Manufacturing Engineer
  • Our Manufacturing Engineers are the focal point of the manufacturing process as they interact with all of the internal support functions and external resources to ensure that the production process is streamlined and maintained without interruption.  Typical assignments in the area of Manufacturing Engineering include:
    • Implementation of Lean conversion initiative.
    • Design of fixturing and tooling
    • Vendor sourcing and qualifying for new products and LCR initiatives
    • Capacity planning
    • Coordination with Design Engineering for "Design for Manufacturability
    • Support the design, development and implementation of mfg. cells for new product introductions
    • Drive Lean manufacturing principles such as Standard Work, Poke-Yoke, Visual Management, Variation Reduction into daily operations
    • Lead kaizen activities to achieve quality, delivery and productivity goals
    • Identify and implement design alternatives to improve quality and cost targets
    • Interface with suppliers to establish root cause and lead sustained problem resolution
    • Provide engineering support for shop floor assembly operations
Quality Assurance
  • QDC is the fundamental drivers in the success of our operations – starting with Quality. The Quality Department is a close partner to the Materials and Operations groups.  These functions work in concert with each other to guarantee Kollmorgen manufactures the highest quality part, at the lowest possible cost, on time, while maintaining an accident free workplace.  Typical assignments in the area of Quality include:
    • Coordinating vendor certifications with the Materials department
    • Participation in ISO or AS quality audits
    • Creation of Quality SOPs to assist the production process
    • Working with Operations on scrap reduction initiatives
    • Preparing Corrective Action measures for non-compliance products
Research and Development
  • Having the best R&D Engineers in each Kollmorgen location is critical to establishing and leveraging a successful, productive, and innovative R&D engineering process.  Our R&D Engineers are the focal point of the innovation and Accelerated Product Development (APD) process as they interact globally with our engineering, support functions and external resources to execute on the product marketing roadmaps.  Typical assignments in the area of R&D Engineering include:
    • Performs laboratory testing and evaluation of prototype and production electric motors and components
    • Builds prototype products and proof-of-concept hardware, modifies production equipment and assists in defining work processes and confirming manufacturability
    • Development of a product/feature design
    • Product/feature specification development and Toll gate review process
    • Implementation of APD process initiatives (I2E) and product road mapping process
    • Test plan development
    • Customer on-site visits and VOC input process
    • Vendor sourcing and qualifying of new components
    • Coordination with Manufacturing Engineering for "Design for Manufacturability"
    • Leading Kollmorgen’s QDSC

Education and/or Experience
  • Pursuing a 4-year Engineering degree.
  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills for direct and frequent communication with internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills for our multi-functional team environment.
  • Ability to work with all levels, including management and production personnel, to resolve technical issues that are identified through the manufacturing process.
