Job Description

Kollmorgen (an Altra company) provides accelerated training and professional development for college graduates looking to become leaders or technical experts in Manufacturing, Design, Technical Sales, or Product Development. Potential career paths include both a technical and a managerial path in diverse Engineering functions such as R&D, Product Development, Operations, Sales or Manufacturing.

Key Assignments

  • First assignments can include Manufacturing Engineer, Quality Engineer, Applications Engineer, Sourcing Engineer and Test & Automation Engineer.
    • Subsequent assignments may include Area Manager, Software Engineer, Supply Chain Logistics Engineer, Design Engineering, and Material Science Engineer.

Below is a description of a few of these potential assignments. Selection of the assignment will involve the participant’s preference, availability of the assignment, and the needs of the organization. The specific responsibilities within each assignment may vary based upon the immediate needs of the business. 

Manufacturing Engineer

Our Manufacturing Engineers are the focal point of the manufacturing process as they interact with all of the internal support functions and external resources to ensure that the production process is streamlined and maintained without interruption. Typical assignments in the area of Manufacturing Engineering include:

  • Ownership of plant/cell layout and designs
  • Implementation of Lean conversion initiatives
  • Design of fixturing and tooling
  • Vendor sourcing and qualifying for new products and LCR initiatives
  • Capacity planning
  • Coordination with Design Engineering for “Design for Manufacturability”
  • Leading Kollmorgen's QDC (Quality, Delivery, Cost) initiative

Quality Assurance Engineer

The Quality Department is a close partner to the Materials and Operations groups. These functions work in concert with each other to guarantee Kollmorgen manufactures the highest quality part, at the lowest possible cost, on time, while maintaining an accident free workplace. Typical assignments in the area of Quality include:

    • Coordinating vendor certifications with the Materials department
    • Participation in ISO or AS quality audits
    • Creation of Quality SOPs to assist the production process
    • Working with Operations on scrap reduction initiatives
    • Preparing Corrective Action measures for non-compliance products

Research and Development

Our R&D Engineers are the focal point of the innovation and Accelerated Product Development (APD) process as they interact globally with our engineering, support functions and external resources to execute on the product marketing roadmaps. Typical assignments in the area of R&D Engineering include:

    • Laboratory testing and evaluation of prototype and production electric motors and components
    • Building prototype products and proof-of-concept hardware, modifies production equipment and assists in defining work processes and confirming manufacturability
    • Development of a product/feature design
    • Product/feature specification development and Toll gate review process
    • Implementation of APD process initiatives (I2E) and product road mapping process
    • Test plan development
    • Customer on-site visits and VOC input process
    • Vendor sourcing and qualifying of new components
    • Coordination with Manufacturing Engineering for "Design for Manufacturability"
    • Leading Kollmorgen’s QDC

Customer Support Applications

Provide technical marketing assistance in the design and integration of customer applications. Provide technical support to sales staff in determining possible applications of company product to customer requirements.  May prepare and present demonstrations and applications of company product.  May provide training and follow-up technical support for customers and distributors. Refer any problems to group leader or supervisor. Adhere to all divisional health and safety regulations.

    • Responsible for product selection assistance based on customer specified requirements.
    • Customer liaison between Product design, Production and other internal departments.
    • Interprets customer needs and aids the customer in defining technical and commercial requirements. 
    • Prepares product pricing proposals and documents the proposal both for presentation to the customer and for internal reference.
    • Works with field sales (outside sales) to manage assigned accounts for product direction, profitability, growth, and attaining sales objectives.

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • BS in Engineering or similar technical degree is required.
  • Previous internship experience in field of study preferred.
  • Leadership experience preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of electric motor and electronics manufacturing is preferred.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with all levels of associates ranging from assembly technicians to management.
