Systems Engineer/Architect - Undersea Optical Cable Systems
 
Location: McLeansville, NC 27301
 
A relocation package is available for the right candidate.
 
To qualify for this position...
  • You must be a US Citizen, AND
  • You must be willing to undergo an intense background check to obtain a Department of Defense Security Clearance, OR
  • Preferably, you already have a Secret or Top Secret clearance
 
You are an experienced systems engineer/architect of long haul, long duration cabled, optical communication systems. If you have experience with undersea systems, fantastic!
 
You're capable of higher level systems engineering, taking things from concept, through design, to deliverables.
 
You're an expert with SONET/SDH, GFP, and OTN, at rates of at least 10+ Gbps, with higher rates (100G) preferred. You're very familiar with DWDM transport systems (metro, unrepeatered, or long-haul), and design and impairment analysis of such systems
 
You are able work well with, and often lead, a team of 10-15 experts in related fields, such as electrical and mechanical engineers, test engineers, etc. You can provide clear and detailed requirements to these co-workers and team members, and respond well to any required changes and improvements.
 
You consider yourself a Senior Advanced Architect Engineer for Undersea Cable Systems.
 
You'll be responsible for critical parts of the system. Some of the things you'll do include...
 
  • Design, develop, build and test systems and products based on optic, photonic and laser technologies.
  • Interact with device, hardware and software Design Teams to assist in overall development of optical systems which includes: specifying, selecting and qualifying active and passive optical components, developing and benchmarking system performance models, developing and implementing test procedures and/or evaluating and selecting appropriate test instrumentation.
  • Recommend technological modifications to the development of new undersea photonic products and/or design changes that improve performance of existing products.
  • Participate in electrical and optical requirements analysis, requirements definition, requirements management, functional analysis, performance analysis (e.g. optical loss, timing, power, etc.), design, integration, and verification of electrical and optical components, equipment and systems.
  • Perform root cause analysis for electrical and optical issues, conduct experimental tests, evaluate results to formulate and implement solutions to issues.
  • Participate in design reviews of electrical and optical components, equipment and systems.
  • Contribute to the research and analysis of data, such as customer design proposal specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application and select components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability.
  • Lead small-scale technical proposals and contribute on medium to large proposals, as a technical writer or Basis of Estimate author.
  • Work on unusually complex problems and provide creative and innovative solutions in a project leadership role.

Required:
  • US Citizen
  • Willing to go through deep background check to get a Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance (or already have a Secret ot Top Secret clearance)
  • Familiarity with high-speed transport, including SONET/SDH, GFP, and OTN, at rates of 10+ Gbps, with higher rates (100G) preferred
  • Familiarity with DWDM transport systems (metro, unrepeatered, or long-haul), and design and impairment analysis of such systems
  • Direct experience with commercial multiplexing, routing, and switching hardware and routing protocols
  • Familiarity with performance monitoring metrics
  • Familiarity with coherent systems
  • Experience in developing requirements and specifications
  • Demonstrated leadership in an integrated team environment
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills
  • 8 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Optical Sciences and Engineering, Physics, or Electrical Engineering from an accredited major university (or equivalent experience), or 6 years of relevant experience with a Master's degree.
  • Willing to travel on occasion for certain testing scenarios and events
 
Desired:
  • Active Secret Clearance (DoD)
  • Experience with 100G+ environments
