Being a Memory Maker as a French Polisher

In this role, you will become part of the Edwardian family and work within Maintenance in Radisson Blu Edwardian Bloomsbury Street

Under general supervision, perform journey-level work in the design, construction, repair and maintenance of structures and related physical facilities. French polishers use hand skills to prepare and treat wood. They will be working on new furniture or restore old pieces of furniture.

They may also work on fitted items such as staircases, wall panels and doors, floors etc. To be a French polisher, you should have a patient approach. You should have good practical skills.

You should also have great customer service skills.


Duties and Responsibilities

Deciding on the type and colour of wood stain to be used

Mixing and applying the stain

Finishing with French polish (a special varnish)

Applying several coats of French polish until the finish you want is achieved

Applying other finishes, such as lacquer, paint, varnish, oil and wax, usually by spraying

You may also do simple repairs, although a cabinet maker or restorer would deal with more complex work

Erect and disassemble scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, and other temporary structures

Grind, scrape, sand, or polish surfaces such as doors, panel or wood flooring, using abrasive tools or machines

Make minor repairs to damaged furniture

Maintain equipment

Remove accessories such as knobs or hinges

You might work at home or in a workshop, factory or studio

Key Requirements


 Key Requirements

CSCS card

Experience of carrying out high quality maintenance works

Experience of working with and understanding a Schedule of Rates

A knowledge and understanding of health and safety regulations

Able to demonstrate good customer care

Able to demonstrate good verbal communication skills

Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, or from other difficult positions.

Skill in the use of the tools and materials

Good at working with your hands

Able to pay close attention to detail

Numerate, for taking measurements

Patient and methodical

Good at matching colours.

Asbestos awareness certificate

Awareness of Health and Safety and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) legislation
