Job Description


 

 This position is responsible for providing expert-level knowledge and support in the area of corrosion engineering for the Chemical and Metallurgical Laboratory at the global headquarters. The incumbent will originate and coordinate routine and non-routine work related to corrosion testing and engineering, providing support to internal teams and the external customer base.
Key Responsibilities:

         Provide expert level technical guidance for test plan development and corrosion theory as applied to product and operating environments. Test programs may utilize existing environmental, flow, immersion, electrochemical, and elevated temperature corrosion test equipment.

         Take a lead role in method development for new/unique/difficult product service environments by interrogating the needs of the operating environment. Devise and specify new and custom test equipment to support these business initiatives.

         Act as the primary technical team member related to specific field test programs, either customer or company as directed.

         Serve as the technical expert for all equipment in the corrosion testing laboratory section, including coordination of capital purchase of new equipment and troubleshooting, calibration, and preventative maintenance of existing equipment.

         Originate and lead materials development projects with the object of evaluation and implementation of new materials, products and operating environments.

         Participate and provide input for incoming lab work to provide analysis and technical direction. Refine ability to distill seemingly disparate information into a “key question”. Identify gaps in required information in order to answer the “key question” and provide needed feedback to the requestor(s).

         Write clear, concise and timely formal reports that include method(s) and sample(s) description, results, interpretation and opinion. Reports are primarily directed to company personnel, but may also be forwarded to suppliers and customer, therefore requiring distinct clarity and sensitivity to the subject. The report is the primary product of the lab and is meant to disseminate “actionable information” to the engineering community.

         Maintain current understanding of advanced in corrosion engineering and science applicable to companies anticipated needs.

          

Required Qualifications:

         Excellent technical communication skills (written and oral) with the ability to convey information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

         Good interpersonal communication skills for interaction at multiple levels within the company and with external contacts (customers and suppliers).

         Demonstrated ability to take theoretical constructs and apply them to real-world problem solving.

         Ability to manage multiple priorities/projects with competing timelines and justification.

         Demonstrated ability to complete detailed research/development projects (independently and in team situations).

         Demonstrated self-starter with excellent organizational skills.

         Operational experience with a variety of salt fog cabinets, electrochemical corrosion testing and immersion corrosion testing equipment.

         Knowledge and experience in corrosion testing a diverse set of metal alloys (primarily aluminum, copper and stainless steels) and coating systems (organic and inorganic).

         Working knowledge of basic statistical concepts.

         Proficient in standard MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).

         Knowledge of experimental/advanced statistical techniques and design of experiments (DOE).

         Understanding of industrial standards for materials and test procedures (ASTM, DIN EN, JIS).

         Knowledge of APQP phase/gate structure for product quality, control and launch.

         Microscopy/failure analysis experience

         Good mechanical aptitude.

         Paint test experience.

         Minimum 5 years related industry experience.

 

Education Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Engineering, Master’s preferred with job-specific experience above.

Travel:

Limited 5% for occasional support of manufacturing facilities and supplier/customer visits.
