Job Description

Position Summary
To proficiently process routine surgical specimens for diagnosis by a physician or for research purposes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Operates histopathology laboratory equipment.
  • Processes routine surgical specimens, embedding, sectioning and staining tissue sections for diagnosis or research:
  1. Orients tissue. Cuts specimen samples using a microtome/cryostat; performs routine, special and CNS stains; coverslips and labels slides for proper identification.
  2. Prepares solutions for routine and special stains; maintains a stock of control slides; records requests for special stains; updates Quality Control Log Book; cleans glassware.
  • Maintains daily log sheets for quality control tests.
  • Records temperatures of ovens, embedding centers and floatation bath and maintenance of microtome/cryostat, staining equipment.
  • Cleans laboratory and laboratory equipment.
  • Performs routine quality control test.
  • Helps physician maintain CLIA certification.

It is now a requirement for anyone in this position, because of its direct patient contact, to have the Hepatitis B Vaccine documentation or signed declination, PPD baseline and annual surveillance (+PPD requires annual symptom review sheet, +/-CXR), respiratory fit testing (saccharine whiff), MMR vaccine series or documentation, and varicella antibody titer or documentation.  You must contact Employee Health Services within 5 days from the date of your new hire orientation session.  Documentation from your primary physician will be acceptable. Failure to comply may lead to disciplinary action up to and including termination.
                                                                                                                                                                         
Qualifications

Education           
High school graduation or an equivalent combination of training and experience is necessary. Aesthetician school training.
 
Experience        
Experience in a Histology laboratory.

Competencies  
Ability to do math calculations, input data into the computer, and analyze data as requested. Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner.  Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations. Must be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people.

Supervision Received
Supervision is received daily from Physician and/or Clinical Practice Manager.
