Job Description

Position Summary

The Research Nurse supports research projects in an assigned Practice Area through the performance of basic clinical and administrative procedures including data collection and tracking. This position helps ensure that GWMFA research projects conform to regulatory and clinical guidelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Other duties may be assigned.

The Research Nurse performs the following duties/responsibilities for the assigned Practice Area:

  1. Interacts with research participants and family members in a friendly, prompt, and caring manner, maintaining confidentiality and respect at all times.
  2. Assess patient study eligibility, obtains past medical history and health status as required by the research protocol.
  3. Abstracts clinical data from medical charts and medical records.
  4. Performs clinical and administrative procedures as necessary for study protocol - i.e. blood pressure, venipuncture, vital signs, dispense medications, completing case forms, answering queries, completing regulatory documents.
  5. Tracks participants’ adverse reactions examples include data management, clinical follow up. Assess adverse reaction, discuss with investing physician, and complete case report and documentation.
  6. Complete and maintain institutional review board documentation (submission, continuing review and safety updates).
  7. Coordinate study recruitment efforts, referrals, advertising, database research,
  8. Schedule patient visits, coordinate testing with other departments.
  9. Prepares study samples for storage and shipping
  10. May be responsible for tracking study income.
  11. Attends investigator meetings as required.
  12. Establish drug maintenance with pharmacy and dispense patient medications.

The Research Nurse may also:

  1. Perform other duties as needed to support the timely completion of research projects that are consistent with established protocols.
  2. Participate in preparation of new research proposals.
  3. Work together with others in the study protocols, such as research coordinators, physicians and technicians.

Qualifications

Education            

  • This position requires completion of an accredited RN nursing program. It also requires a current D.C Registered Nurse license.
  • RN licensure required for the advanced medical knowledge and expertise.

Experience         

  • Two to five years’ experience with infusion or IV therapy, apheresis a plus. 
  • At least 2 years in clinical research preferred.
