Job Description

Position Summary
To supervise and train Ophthalmic Technicians in the performance of standardized ophthalmic measurements and procedures; assist physicians in diagnostic, therapeutic, and corrective procedures and coordinate all ancillary testing in the Ophthalmology department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Supervises and trains Technicians to perform visual-field examinations, applanation pressures, minor surgery, tonometry, lensometery, patient instruction in contact lens care, photography, and ultrasound.
2. Performs all of the above procedures.
3. Performs specialized or advanced tests such as orbital ultrasonography, dark adaptation studies, static perimetry, refraction, A&B scan, quantitative perimetry, and photography.
4. Assists physicians in minor surgery and in research tasks.
5. Performs routine maintenance and minor repair of ophthalmic equipment and insures asepsis of appropriate instruments in all physicians’ exam rooms and in research tasks.
6. Orders ophthalmic supplies and medications for the department and supervises daily stocking of exam rooms.
7. Assists in selection and evaluation of Ophthalmic Assistants and Ophthalmic Technicians.
8. Demonstrates ophthalmic techniques to residents and medical students.
9. Responsible for monitoring regular evaluation and personnel record keeping for those under his/ her supervision.
10. Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education Minimum of two years of college to include basic medical terminology, anatomy and science knowledge. Must have current certification as a COT according to iJCAHPO standards.

Experience Three to five years of experience as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) is required. Minimum two years of supervisory or manager experience in an ophthalmology setting is required.

Competencies Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner. Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations. Must have strong interpersonal skills and be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people at various levels within and outside the MFA.
