Organizational Background:

Heartland Alliance International (HAI) is the global arm of Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights, a family of organizations that has been leading anti-poverty and social justice work in Chicago for more than 125 years. HAI is comprised of nearly a dozen country offices operating programs on a broad range of human rights issues globally as well as the Chicago-based Marjorie Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors of Torture, which serves individuals from more than 50 countries. HAI is making significant investments in its programming and leadership in the fields of trauma-informed mental health care and access to justice for marginalized people. It is also an industry leader in access to high-quality and stigma-free health care, particularly for HIV prevention, care and treatment. Across all of its programs, HAI promotes progressive, innovative approaches to human rights protection and gender equality that are inclusive of LGBT rights. HAI is operating programs worldwide including in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Cote d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Iraq and Lebanon.

 Summary: This position is responsible for helping to maintain the financial health of Heartland Alliance and Heartland Alliance International as directed by the respective Controllers.  This position includes, but is not limited to, the reconciliation of balance sheet accounts, the handling of daily transactions, month-end closing tasks, year-end audit tasks, outside agency audit tasks, and other job-related duties as assigned for both entities. In addition, this position is also responsible for identifying opportunities to inform system change by recommending changes to existing policies and procedures, and to strictly enforce accounting policies and procedures as required to maintain the financial integrity of the Organization. To do this the candidate must have a thorough understanding of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitors, maintains and reconciles balance sheet accounts with proper back-up documentation for two Heartland Alliance entities (refer to PwC Advisory Viewpoint).

  • Must be able to rationalize and make independent suggestions for corrective measures to properly reflect the balances in each balance sheet account.

  • Implements process improvement to ensure proper use of balance sheet accounts.

  • Must demonstrate thorough understanding of accounting concepts.

  • Directly supports the development and ongoing management of standardized accounting practices and systems in the field.

  • Assists in the production of financial statements and other adhoc reporting.

  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of contractual obligations and other pertinent matters as set forth in the business transactions of the organization and various contractual documents.

  • Manages accounts receivable and program draws, including collections and analysis.

  • Assists with monitoring statutory, legal and organizational compliance.

  • Coordinates assembly, review and recording of cost-share documentation.

  • Monitors payments to sub-grantees and ensures receipt and review of supporting documentation.

  • Manages special projects as assigned.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:  The Assistant Controller is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of Accounting support staff.  Further, the Assistant Controller carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Heartland Alliance’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Education and/or Experience:Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (B.A. or BS or international equivalent).  Minimum of four years supervisory experience and six years of accounting experience with progressively increasing responsibilities which includes an emphasis on the account investigation and reconciliation process with progressively increasing responsibilities.   . 

  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:Recognition as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is required.

  • English Language Skills:Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from employees, regulatory agencies, or members of the business and financial communities. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and Board of Directors.

  • Foreign Language Skills: Fluency in a foreign language, especially French or Spanish, is highly desirable.

  • Mathematical Skills:Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

  • Reasoning Ability:Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Computer Skills:  To perform this job successfully, an individual should have or be able and willing to acquire knowledge of Financial Edge and Acumatica; and have advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office.

  •  Ability to make international trips and work in situations of conflict with minimal physical amenities.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.

  • The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.

  • The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
