Job Description

Summary This position is responsible for the assessment, career advisement, and  planning with program participants that will guide them in achieving short- and long-term employment related goals. This position works primarily with participants throughout their employment search and requires job counseling to participants that are in training activites and or employment.  The Job Coach works with the participants in identifying barriers to employment and utiltizing their strengths and developing skills or resources necessary to address those barriers. The Job Coach works closely with case managers, Employment Placement Coordinator, Employment staff, and other professionals to develop and market new and innovative approaches to job development, corporate relations, community and corporate events for successful job fairs, referrals, and placement of the participant.  Facilitates workforce development classes, on-the-job coaching and retention services and maintains a solid understanding of the changing job market.  Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives, within the framework outlined below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Completes career related assessments to program participants and makes employment related recommendations.
  • Assists participants to document previous work history, and determine the accuracy of work history.
  • Assists program particpants with resume refinement or creating a resume.
  • Faciliates career development workshops to increase employability skills for agency participants.
  • Ensures classes appeal to various learning styles and utilizing various modes of instruction to maintain active participation by program participants.
  • Completes an employment work plan in conjunction with other employment related services; works in conjunction with case management process.
  • Assists participants in identifying barriers to employment and provides necessary referrals, skill development, etc. to remove such barriers.
  • Assists participants with formulating realistic career goals, and pre-qualifies participants for employment within various industry sectors, based upon knowledge of the current job market.
  • Provide career advise to program participants that delineates steps and timelines in their employability plan to achieve employment and career goals.
  • Develops subsidized job slots when working within a transitional jobs program and makes site visits to program participants, as well as assessments and evaluates performance with participant and mentor as determined by program or contract requirements.  Consult with mentor and or work-site supervisor to resolve any problems that may arise on-site.
  • Places participants in subsidized job slots and develops a retention tracking program for subsidized job slots that incorporates a data collection system used to determine job retention at intervals to be determined by the program contract.
  • Assists participants with practical job search, profile and career development, and job-related issues.
  • Assist in developing, managing, and maintaining an employer/job development database for informational, tracking, and archieval purposes.   
  • Completes all required paperwork in a neat and timely manner.  Maintain participants’ files and organizational database to include all particpant’s notes as required by program or contract guidelines, as well as demographic and employment information as needed.  Strong attention to detail is required.  
  • Maintains required contact with Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) skills match system system to identify job openings that will assist employed participants transition into higher paying jobs to achieve careers.  
  • Reacts to change productively.

  • Education and/or Experience:   Bachelor's Degree and three years experience in employment related or case management social service settings working with the hard to employ and special needs populations with multiple barriers affecting employability development; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Specific ExperienceProven counseling strengths in vocational training and career advisement. 
  • Other Qualifications:  A valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout Chicago and surrounding areas.
  • Computer Skills:  Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office.  Proficiency in Microsoft Access may be required.
  • Language SkillsFluency in a second language may be required.  Ability to read and interpret documents such operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
