Heartland Alliance (HA) is coordinating READI (Rapid Employment and Development Initiative) Chicago, a network of community-based organizations on Chicago’s South and West Sides that will engage individuals at the highest risk of becoming victims or perpetrators of gun violence in an 18-month wage-subsidized transitional job (TJ) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program, followed by up to six months of follow-up case management and coaching support.  The goals of READI Chicago are to: decrease shootings and homicides among those at highest risk of gun violence; create new opportunities for these same individuals to change their life trajectory and decrease their involvement with the criminal justice system; and help build an infrastructure at the community level to promote long-term safety and opportunity in Chicago’s most impoverished communities. 

Reporting to the Director of Programs, the Director of Training is responsible for the overall learning and development culture within READI Chicago, including external partners directly supporting READI. Overall, the identification of performance gaps within the READI program, partnership with Heartland Alliance enterprise learning & development initiatives, development and measurement of READI-centric curriculum/s, and subject matter expertise consulting are among the major accountabilities of this role. This role will partner closely with both the HA  Director of Learning & Development and the READI Clinical Manager to develop both short and long-term strategies for READI, leading and managing READI Chicago staff, partner, and participant onboarding and learning & development opportunities; and supporting organizational capacity-building activities for program partners. This role will contribute to organizational culture aligned with the core commitments of tackling root causes; encouraging creativity and innovation; using data for continuous improvement and to measure progress; applying an equity lens to all that we do; partnering with participants and others to co-create and achieve ambitious, shared goals; and aligning and capitalizing on our global and domestic efforts and perspective.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of strength-based strategies to deliver effective activities for staff, partners and participants in these four key areas:
    • Capacity-building
    • Technical assistance
    • Onboarding
    • Learning & Development
  • Partner with Heartland Alliance Learning and Development Director to create and implement an onboarding program for READI staff
  • Develop, implement, and measure an effective and engaging orientation for READI participants
  • Create a learning & development curriculum that is accessible and relevant for READI while aligning with overall HA learning & development curriculum and strategies
  • Develop process to measure and analyze impact of learning and development programs
  • Build relationships with READI team members, partner organizations and key stakeholders, and establish collaborative working relationships across the Heartland Alliance enterprise; maintain open lines of communication regarding development opportunities
  •  Identify opportunities to share completed learning & development programs with external partner agencies to leverage within their teams
  • Use adult learning methods as a framework and incorporate trauma-informed care and strength-based principles to design courses and curriculum for target audiences
  • Collaborate and coordinate with key stakeholders in all aspects of activity planning, monitoring, and implementation
  • Provide day-to-day project management; develop and monitor project work plans and budgets
  • Work with HA’s Director of Learning & Development to design, implement, and sustain participant-centered weekly skills-building and educational programming
  • Work with READI Chicago Senior Director, Heartland Alliance’s Midwest Harm Reduction Institute, Heartland Alliance Director of Learning and Development, and others to develop and implement an onboarding program and an ongoing learning & development program for READI staff
  • Coordinate and lead ongoing learning & development offerings for field offices  
  • Identify programmatic capacity-building opportunities for partner organizations and community areas, and shepherd essential resources, expertise, and support to meet network-wide and community-specific needs, as related to the success of the READI Chicago program 
  • Encourage, mentor, support, and develop partner organizations and staff, building capacity where needed
  • Assist in the preparation of program reports, as related to Learning & Development initiatives
  • Participate in team and partner meetings as required
  • Maintain organized project files, including emails, databases, presentations, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 7+ years of related lived and professional experience with Learning & Development or Organizational Learning within social work, public health, criminal justice, sociology, public policy, law, or related human service field
  • Demonstrated experience working with the target population
  • Demonstrated experience in the design, evaluation, and remediation of learning interventions
  • Ability to synthesize complex issues and articulate clearly to diverse audiences
  • Ability to engage and negotiate respectfully with diverse stakeholders to advance projects
  • Demonstrated track record exhibiting problem-solving, critical thinking, systemic thinking and communications skills
  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and excellence in organizational effectiveness
