Job Description

Summary:  This position attends to the safety and security needs of program participants, including but not limited to unaccompanied minors and other detained populations. This position also provides a broad range of basic care services to participants to ensure their overall well-being and is responsible for regular household chores.  Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives, within the framework outlined below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides security for the safety and well-being of program participants.
  • Supervises program participants individually or in groups and acts in a mentor role, leading by example for participants to set realistic expectations for behavior.
  • Assist with early morning activities such as wake up, roll call and breakfast monitoring.
  • Assists participants with discharge preparations for early morning departures. 
  • Performs housekeeping duties such as cleaning the kitchen, bathrooms and hallways, doing laundry, preparing meals, and organizing rooms and storage spaces, among other similar tasks.
  • Tracks inventories of household items and cleaning supplies and communicates when supplies need to be re-ordered.
  • Performs administrative tasks, various office duties and completes necessary forms as needed.
  • Conducts multiple roll-calls throughout each shift, conducts perimeter checks inside and outside the facility, monitors movement of program participants within program guidelines, and monitors electronic security equipment.
  • Responds immediately to security and safety breaches, including but not limited to attempts to abscond, physical altercations, and attempts by program participants to put self or others at risk of harm.
  • Provides physical restraints and escorts as needed in accord with restraint and crisis intervention training and program guidelines.
  • May provide transportation of program participants in agency vehicle, as necessitated by program and/or participant needs.
  • Participates and actively contributes in regular supervisory and staff meetings, in-house training sessions, and other activities as required. 
  • Other duties may be assigned.

  • Education and/or Experience:  High school diploma or equivalent and minimum of three years’ experience in security or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Language Skills:  Fluency in a second language may be required.  Ability to write routine correspondence, staff communications and reports.  Ability to speak effectively before groups and to communicate with all levels of staff.  Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Physical Ability: Ability to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.  Ability to assist in physically restraining and escorting youth (after successful completion of an internal non-violent crisis intervention training and certification course, which will be provided).
  • Reasoning Ability:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Other Qualifications:  A valid driver's license is required. 

Work Environment: Each YRS program site operates on a 24/7 basis, 365 days per year.  To meet both the needs of our participants and contractual obligations, employees of YRS need to be flexible in regards to work location and scheduling, each of which may be altered by program management based on programmatic needs.

  • Three primary shifts are scheduled each day including weekends and holidays.  Employees may be required to work any one of these shifts and, if necessary, may be required to work a split-shift, or an extended or shorter shift, based on the needs of the program.
  • All employees share responsibility for the cleaning and basic maintenance of our facilities.
  • The employee may be required to work at various YRS facilities as necessitated by program needs.
  • The employee may be required to remain on Organization premises during breaks and/or meal periods and may be required to stay on Organization premises until their replacement arrives.
  • Crisis prevention and behavioral management techniques may include physically restraining and escorting program participants.
