Job Description

General Summary: 

The Experimental Test Pilot is responsible for planning, conduct and reporting of development and certification flight test activities on Honda Aircraft Company products.  They have an in-depth technical knowledge of flight test techniques and experience in aircraft certification documents and processes. Provides design input to the engineering team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Write and/or review development or certification test plans and reports for assigned flight tests.

  2. Participate in test readiness meetings.

  3. Participate in the planning, coordination, and short-term scheduling of tests to be performed on assigned test aircraft

  4. Coordinate with flight test engineers as required ensuring the aircraft is configured properly to meet test objectives.

  5. Plan and conduct development and certification flight test activities on assigned airplane.

  6. Prepare and distribute Flight Reports after each assigned test flight.

  7. Perform FAA evaluation flights.

  8. Identify and report customer and certification issues to Program Management.

  9. Support Honda Aircraft production flight test and corporate flight activities on as-needed basis.

Education, Work Experience, Certification and/or Licensure:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or technically related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

  2. 10 years of directly related experience.

  3. Commercial multi-engine with instrument rating (AMEL) and minimum:

    1. 1,500 hours PIC total time

    2. 1,000 hours turbine aircraft time

    3. 500 hours PIC turbine time

  4. FAA Second Class Medical certificate

  5. One of the following:

    1. Graduate of military Test Pilot School (pilot course)

    2. Graduate of civilian Test Pilot School (pilot long course)

    3. Minimum of five years of engineering flight test experience as a flight crew member

  6. FAA Flight Test Pilot DER designation desired.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Practical knowledge of flight test procedures and requirements pertaining to FAA Civil (14 CFR Part 23 and/or Part 25) certification.

  2. Interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with a variety of individuals, departments and organizations.

  3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  4. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Incumbents may be routinely exposed to equipment operational noise heat-cold-dust, and/or aircraft equipment, parts, or fuel odors.

  2. Incumbents may be required to stand, sit, squat, walk, bend, climb ladders, move, reach, or stretch for prolonged time periods with no restrictions, as required by job duties.

  3. Work in a safe and professional manner while adhering to all regulatory requirements (FAA, OSHA, DOT, EPA, State, and Federal regulations, etc.).

  4. Read, hear, speak, and see with no restrictions, as required by job duties.

  5. Comprehend and adhere to management directions and/or safety instructions with no restrictions.

  6. Effectively communicate in Business English language.

  7. Pull, push, carry, lift, or move items up to 10 lbs. throughout the work shift without assistance, as required by job duties.

  8. Pull, push, carry, lift or move materials/people/items/equipment weighing up to 50lbs or more during the work shift, with the use of Company provided “reach assistance technology” or “movement assist technology” (fork-lifts, pallet jacks, pulleys, dolly’s, robotics reach equipment, people movers etc.), as required by job duties.
