The Opportunity:

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Engineered Solutions Group, which is responsible for our rapidly-growing automation and custom product lines. As an Applications Engineer, your role will involve a unique blend of expert applications consulting, sales support, product marketing, and business development.
In this multifaceted role, you will become a subject matter expert on the automation and custom product lines. You will follow automation opportunities from the first inquiry to post-install support; developing solutions with some of the largest and most influential companies in the world and furthering our market-leader status through new product offerings and business development. This position will require tight-knit relationships with both our customers and sales force to produce complex automation system proposals, pursue custom product requests, and resolve customer issues. In addition, you will conduct product demonstrations, create and present sales collateral, and train the sales, service and support staff on the use of our products. 
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Support our global network of sales personnel by assisting in answering technical and commercial questions, creating automation system technical proposals, creating custom product requests, and resolving customer issues.
  • Become a subject matter expert on operation of automation systems, automation customers and their applications, and automation system configurations and limitations.
  • Lead the training of sales, service, and support staff on the operation of automation products and strategic selling initiatives.
  • Conduct applications testing and customer demonstrations on automated and standalone Instron systems both in support of system sales and for application troubleshooting. Lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) sessions and use expert applications knowledge to ensure automation system specifications meet customers’ needs.
  • Worldwide travel to customer sites for automation system sales consultations, installations, and product support. Participate in trade shows, technical conferences, exhibitions, and seminars.
  • Assist product development and road map planning by identifying, documenting, and analyzing market opportunities, market trends, and competitive information.
  • Generate collateral for internal and external customers by conducting photo and video shoots, constructing and maintaining web pages, and creating of sales tools.
  • Generate application papers and technical notes for use by customers to ensure Instron’s status as the global leader in materials testing knowledge and expertise.
 
Requirements:
 
Successful candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in engineering (preferably Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science), with some relevant commercial work experience or an interest in sales or marketing. Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills are also required for this role.
Travel to customer sites, technical conferences, exhibitions and seminars may represent up to 25% of work time.
