Title:      Materials Engineer/Rubber & Coatings R&D      

Reports to:     Wiper R&D Team Lead at ITW Car Care

Location:         Houston, TX


Responsible for the development and documentation of new products and support existing products. Works closely with Product Development team including, Innovation, R&D, Marketing, and Operations. Create prototype coatings and rubber, bills of materials, written reports, and inspection protocols as well as perform product testing. Interface with our manufacturing partners.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analysis of competitive products and competitive solutions.
  • Identification of potential materials, manufacturing methods, and sources.
  • Develop samples and processes for coatings and rubbers to determine cost, performance & feasibility. Assist in preparation of unit cost estimates.
  • Specify materials and production processes & Resolve structural and development issues.
  • Develop performance requirements and testing protocols.
  • Product testing and evaluation. Develop QC requirements and pre-ship inspection protocols.
  • File invention disclosures and patents to protect ITW Global Brands and RainX inventions.
  • Work with the overall product development team to provide accurate, well-defined and convincing verbal and written presentations and documentation, material specifications to manufacturin.
  • Work with our manufacturing partners to manage tight timelines and produce high quality products.
  • Travel to customers and vendors as required, including international travel.


  • 2 to 5 years of experience working in semi-durable goods such as Consumer Products, Materials used in Oil Industry (like rubber seals, molds) and/or Automotive wiper or products.  BSc degree in Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Physical Chemistry or Chemical engineering. Prefer MS,Phd.
  • Knowledge of rubber/glass materials, process and coating technologies.
  • Hands-on experience in building prototypes.
  • Able to communicate effectively among team members in a culturally diverse environment
  • Innovative thinking with past successful examples.

  • Smart and creative with strong proven problem-solving skills in active product development environments.
  • Detail oriented, self-motivated, and hardworking
  • Strong communication skills are essential with the ability to clearly present ideas to a cross-functional team and manufacturing partners.
  • Must show the strong sense of urgency required in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Must have experience designing parts using various materials and processes like Injection Molding.
  • Production experience working with international suppliers is ideal (Focus on Asian suppliers).
