Calibration Lab Technician

Summary
 
Under general supervision, maintains a system of Force/Measurement Standards in Instron’s in-house force laboratory with related test fixtures and instrumentation.  Performs complex verification of standard systems used in the development and manufacture of Force Transducers.  Provides calibration analysis, procedures, and training for the proper implementation of those standards. Calibrates customers or Instron Standards to ASTM/ISO or special specification.
 
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
 
  • Calibrates force transducers in Instron’s in-house force laboratory.
  • Provides technical support during the specification of Force/Measurement Standards and maintains a system of Standards to ensure the quality of Force Transducer System of development and manufacture.
  • Assists in the design and building of a variety of test fixtures to support the use of Load Cell Standards during load weighing system calibration.
  • Requisitions, assembles and distributes new calibration equipment to field service.
  • Assists Field Service in training and problem solving with field service engineers and other in-house calibration technicians. Recommends use of special fixturing on both Instron and competitive testing equipment to perform accurate calibration.
  • Maintains proper filing system to ensure documentation for Force Standards.
  • Assists in the creation and validation of work instructions required to support both in-house and field calibration activities.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean work environment by participating in good housekeeping activities within the laboratory.
  • Organize calibration workload and provide metrics to assist in assessing efficiency of the Laboratory.
 
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required
 
  • Working knowledge in the calibration of Precision Force Transducers, utilizing both primary and secondary standard systems, normally acquired through attainment of an Associate's degree in technical disciplines and 4 - 5 years related experience or 10-years experience with no degree.
  • Experience in the design specification and application of testing fixtures for both internal and field system calibration.
  • Familiarization with American Society of Testing Materials testing practices using Load Cell Standard systems, and National Institute of Standards and Technology calibration procedures.
  • Some knowledge in Strain Gage theory, calibration of electronic instrumentation and quality control discipline, and a working knowledge of Transducer assembly.
  • Must be capable of applying specialized calibration techniques for a variety of complex testing configurations.
  • Must be able to function effectively from verbal instruction and establish work schedules with minimal direction.
  • Must strive to keep abreast of technological advances. Must be familiar with the operation of both electromechanical and servo-hydraulic testing systems, and be capable of adjustment/repair of the Load Weighing system.
 
 
Working Conditions
 
Normal plant environment with some exposure to dirt, dust, noise and grease, operational equipment, and the hazards associated with the application of Force Measuring Instrumentation.
