Summary:
Under general supervision, safely and efficiently sets up and operates common machine tools in order to manufacture parts, precision tools, jigs, fixtures, and assemblies.  Proficiently and safely uses all hand tools and hand power tools.  Performs bench operations.  Works from complex blueprints and sketches.
 
 
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Reads and interprets moderately complex blueprints and sketches to perform machining and assembling operations.
  • Sets up and operates machine shop equipment, which will include manual milling machines and lathes, as well as CNC Mills and Lathes.
  • Plans proper sequence of operations for matching parts. May receive occasional guidance from supervision and higher-level machinists.
  • Works to tolerance within .001 inches.Holds tolerances and finishes as specified and takes advantage of liberal tolerances to obtain best possible production.
  • Selects proper cutting tools considering the machineability and configuration of the material and the rigidity and power of machine. Receives occasional assistance from supervision and higher-level machinists.
  • Selects proper speed and feed rates compatible with the above.
  • Analyzes performance of tools and determines source of malfunction; takes corrective action.
  • Checks and verifies work performance accuracy using all necessary measuring instruments and inspection equipment such as micrometers, scales, verniers, calipers, and depth gauges.
  • Keeps equipment, tools, and work area in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on all shop equipment as required.
     
    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:
  • Ability to read and interpret moderately complex blueprints, sketches, and machining instructions. Knowledge of basic shop math, normally associated with a technical high school education.
  • Ability to operate machine shop equipment and measuring tools at a level acquired in a minimum of 2 years of related experience.
  • Mechanical ability and manual dexterity to be able to perform all required duties with relative ease .Ability to cope with occasional mental/visual strain associated with some precision jobs.
  • Physical stamina for standing during working hours, and to safely handle all parts and accessories typical of machine shop operation.
 
 
            Working Conditions:
  • Normal Machine Shop environment with moderate temperature changes, medium to high noise levels, and the hazards associated with a Machine Shop
  • such as rotating cutting tools and work pieces, flying chips, coolant fumes, handling of parts with burrs and sharp edges.  Such hazards require strict adherence to, and use of protective procedures and devices such as safety glasses.
