SUMMARY

The Human Resources/Safety Supervisor

  • Partner with Plant Leadership Team Members and employees to grow and sustain a culture of operational excellence and “zero harm” (managing risk so no injuries or harm to employees, property, environment, community, shareholder or customer occur while doing work).
  • Provide support to the HR Manager while developing expertise, creativity, and initiative in planning, attracting, developing, and retaining the talent to operate the plant in the most productive and cost-efficient manner.
  • Serve as the “Subject Matter Expert” in Safety practices, processes, policies, and legal compliance to protect company resources and foster a positive work environment and a reputation as a great place to work.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Human Resources (40%)

  •    Promote a safe workplace through systemic and proactive safety and environmental health practices and processes. Demonstrate strong proficiency in OSHA compliance and workers compensation.
  •    Develop and lead a culture of positive employee relations, including employee activities, communications, community service, workplace safety, accident prevention and awareness.
  •    Practice superior Human Resources customer service and response.
  •    Partner with the HR Manager in selecting and developing operations team member capable of carrying out needed operations strategies and improving employee relations and operation efficiencies
  •    Provide a strong perspective and voice in advocating for decisions in the best interest of employees and the operation. Requires the ability to challenge in a direct but constructive manner.
  •    Work with Plant leadership to assess talent and build bench-strength and succession plans.
  •    Use creativity and resourcefulness in attracting the right talent in a timely manner.
  •    Partner with department managers and supervisors to improve retention.
  •    Coordinate onboarding and training for new hires to include safety training
  •    Effectively monitor staffing projections, turnover trends, and talent gaps, including staffing contingency plans for quick responsiveness to various operations situations.
  •    Guide Plant leadership in creating a culture of accountability and support where performers thrive and poor performers quickly improve or are managed out.
  •    Support and ensure compliance with ITW policies and procedures and local, state, and federal regulatory agencies, while ensuring adherence to the ITW Code of Conduct.
  •    Provide leadership for problem solving and conflict resolution to facilitate improved working relationships.
  •    Develop meaningful performance measurements for both short- and long-term Safety and HR measures that support ITW measures
  •    Track all quarterly safety matrix (LTA / MTI / Near Misses / First Aid) - Ability to grow the environmental, health, and safety program to world class standards
  •    Drive internal and external communications to ensure consistent employee focus on short- and long-term objectives.
  •    Continue to represent ITW as a valuable and outstanding corporate citizen in its communities.

Safety (60%)

  • Develop and identify Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) to ensure a safe work environment for the plant employees, contractors, visitors and community.
  • Perform safety audits of the plant and perform periodic compliance audits.
  • Immediately correct or facilitate the correction of items / conditions out of compliance to safety standards or company policy.
  • Review safety audits with the safety committee ensuring understanding and provide copy of safety audit to Operations / Production Manager, and Business Unit Manager
  • Coordinate matters of safety, health, and welfare with the appropriate stakeholders
  • Lead or assist with accident or near miss investigations to determine root cause and corrective actions. Ensure that all accidents and near misses are reported and documented.

EXPERIENCE and QUALIFICATIONS

The quality of experience and accomplishments will have greater weight than years of experience. The Human Resources/Safety Supervisor will have a minimum of three to five years of progressive Human Resources and Safety experience with a demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business, or another related field.
  • Human Resources and safety leadership in manufacturing operations. The particular industry is not as important as an understanding of operations involved in the processing of raw material into finished product.
  • Leadership skills in identifying and assembling teams to drive results.
  • Strong communication skills, particularly in the ability to lead training and to conduct meetings.
  • Results that demonstrate an understanding of manufacturing safety practices and how Human Resources can impact the success of the business.
  • A track record of processes and programs that achieve positive and quantifiable results in hiring and retention.
  • Must have the skill and ability to conduct and/or support sensitive investigations involving company personnel, assets and/or proprietary information.
  • Experience with HRMS/HRIS/ERP.
  • Success in a role requiring the HR/Safety Supervisor to be a hands-on contributor with minimal staff resources.
