Lasko Products, an industry leader in the design and manufacture of portable fans and heaters for over 100 years, is seeking a Director of Purchasing to join our team This person will form an integral part of the Supply Chain function’s leadership team in the achievement of Operational objectives. The role is key in leading the Company forward in securing quality suppliers of materials and components covering price, delivery, and quality targets. The person in this role will have a clear project focus, supporting the purchasing function at both a strategic and functional level to help achieve objectives required to aid in new product development with marketing and engineering along with production of existing products. 

Essential Functions                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    

  • Establish and maintain policies and procedures for the responsible purchasing of materials, supplies, equipment, and services.
  • Continuously evaluate and seek efficiencies to improve the systems and procedures of the Purchasing department/team.
  • Effectively manage a robust base of supplier relationships; address and resolve supplier issues and concerns.
  • Review and approve the selection of vendors; ensure Buyers are trained to assess vendor capabilities, sourcing development, and vendor performance.
  • Negotiate terms of major contracts and orders; recommend major supply/material purchases as appropriate due to pricing and availability shifts; seek favorable pricing to include discounts and rebates.
  • Ensure suppliers deliver goods and materials on time to meet production needs.
  • Ensure documentation and forms are properly completed and the terms and conditions of purchases are appropriate.
  • Manage and maintain records to include pricing histories, vendor evaluations, etc.
  • Partner with internal departments and foster a cohesive working relationship.
  • As appropriate function as a Buyer, Purchasing Agent, or similar.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge base of trends and standards of practice in the Purchasing function.
  • Attend meetings and represent the Purchasing team as appropriate or deemed necessary; may serve on one or more committees or project groups.
  • Manage the activities of the Purchasing team. Provide leadership, coaching, direction and growth opportunities to members of the department, performing those responsibilities in accordance with the established policies and applicable laws. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, planning, assigning or directing work, appraising performance, disciplining team members and resolving problems. Work with Human Resources to resolve more complex team member-related issues.
  • Other duties as deemed necessary.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Supervise the overall execution of the purchasing team through coaching methods, and leading by example to drive operational excellence.
  • Foster close working relationships with associated departments e.g. Sales, Engineering and Production, Business Development.
  • Continually improve purchasing methods, processes, and drive down external spends.
  • To carry out a comprehensive review of the Purchasing function and its methodology and drive the documentation of it through the identification of gaps and implement improvements.
  • Drive supplier scorecards/ratings to measure supplier performance
  • Improve efficiencies of the existing ERP system by utilizing automated functions such as Auto req, and automatic re-order points.
  • Drive cost reduction activities domestically and internationally.
  • Issue requisitions and purchase orders per MRP or other means that drive demand.
  • Drive supplier Kanban / Supplier consignment programs within the replenishment activities
  • Manage strategic supplier partnerships (direct, trading company, key partners). Assure US, China and International material/product flow is efficient and effective.
  • Manage global procurement process – identify and recommend vendors, follow up on sourcing projects, monitor production and quality activities.
  • Coordinate projects and respond to requests between US and global partners when needed. 


Required Education and Experience 

  • 4-year degree in supply chain or a business-related subject
  • CIPS/APICS qualified or working towards
  • Minimum 7 years of experience as a Purchasing buyer or greater
  • 3 years minimum within a supervisory role
  • Strong knowledge of the Purchasing function within a manufacturing environment.
  • Proven knowledge of negotiation tactics.
  • Knowledge of domestic and international contract writing.
  • Knowledge of Just in Time (JIT) and Lean management principles.
  • Proficiency using a Personal Computer (PC) to include Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency using Procurement/Purchasing software solutions and/or Enterprise Resource Planning solutions (i.e., SAP, QAD).
  • Leadership skills and the ability to inspire direct and indirect reports.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing in English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain professional relationships with persons within and outside the Company of varying personality types.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to maintain information in a logical and well thought-out manner.
  • Ability to travel within the United States and internationally.
  • Ability to be responsibly creative in the management of procurement/purchasing.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team of direct reports in pursuit of a common goal.
  • Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness.
