Job Overview:
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for development, maintenance, and implementation of electrical systems, robust control systems, standards, policies and procedures that result in equipment that is capable of delivering reliable efficiency and all necessary operating functions for the maintenance and production team. Monitors Department performance. Develops, implements, and improves the operation of equipment. Acts as interface between maintenance technicians and engineering to ensure the maintenance of equipment in production. Implement an established maintenance program and maintain detailed maintenance records.
  • Maintain plant controls standards including software, fieldbus networks, visualization systems, hardware, configuration and documentation.
  • Support the production operations team by being onsite on call for controls related issues such as program optimizations and breakdown support, requiring electrical knowledge  and programming capabilities.
  • Provide expert level controls support for downtime troubleshooting and continuous improvement projects in battery operations.
  • Develop, maintain and oversee maintenance systems and core maintenance activities in the core area.
  • Manage outsourcing activities and selection of key service contractors and suppliers.
    Assist in the development and implementation of maintenance training programs as related to the equipment-based technologies and control systems. Deliver training in areas of technical expertise.
  • Create Single Point Lessons and train others in the application thereof.
  • Define equipment life cycle and develop plans associated with them as required (i.e. rebuilds, upgrades, replacements, etc.).
  • Analyze shop efficiency/equipment downtime and provide plans and countermeasures for improvement.
  • Track all line related downtime systematically to improve efficiency.
  • Conduct breakdown investigations related to extended downtime & maintenance system failures and modify system accordingly.
  • Improve throughput and uptime by analyzing existing applications or processes to optimize PLC  programs.
  • Work with robot programmers and maintenance, or alone, to optimize and improve the running, messaging and recovery in the automated lines.
  • Develop all predictive and long-term preventative maintenance plans with respect to the electrical and controls aspects of production equipment.
  • Responsible for auditing and maintenance of Preventative Maintenance (PM) system including all equipment care tasks in conjunction with the maintenance team.
  • Plan and prepare for product changes and their impact on processes, equipment, tooling, in conjunction with supporting departments (Production, Process Engineering, Maintenance, etc.)
  • Develop, improve, and modify equipment, buy-off and “Scope of Work” standards.
  • Ensure equipment safety standards related to new technologies.
  • Responsible for project management, planning, design reviews, implementation, and successful execution of expense and capital related projects in area of responsibility.
  • Coordinate weekend work and shutdown activities as required.
  • Participate in weekend work activities overseeing/coordinating contractors and supporting maintenance activities.
  • Responsible for major rebuild, repair, and refurbishment projects pertaining to electrical and controls functions.
  • Responsible for initial spare parts setup and establishing correct inventory levels for common controls and electrical parts.
  • Write project justifications, develop scope of work standards, and project timelines.
  • Identify and implement updates or upgrades to the PLC and automation control systems.
  • Perform safe work practices and participate in trainings and safety programs in a positive and proactive way by following safety rules, procedures, regulations, standards and laws.
  • Responsible to support implementation of new equipment.
  • Drives the implementation of continuous improvement processes for efficiency to create a Lean Manufacturing environment.
  • May train and support less experienced engineers
  • Participates in regularly scheduled team meetings
  • Will perform other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or other relevant degree required. 
  • 5 years plus of relevant experience required, strongly preferring automotive environment including experience with: experience in controls, automation and electrical engineering-related manufacturing maintenance support, software development, PLC programming, project implementation commissioning support, and coordination.
  • PLC experience such as; Siemens Step 7 and Tia Portal programming software
  • Working knowledge of MS Office, AutoCad
  • Working knowledge of Siemens TIA Portal controls and associated hardware, field bus network systems, robotic systems and associated robotic applications.
  • Experience working with (modifying and troubleshooting) PLC to middleware systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot ethernet and ProfiNet communications systems
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems.

Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC (“MBV”) is a plant in Ladson, South Carolina that produces Sprinter vans for the U.S. and Canadian market under the brands Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner. The midsize Mercedes-Benz Metris vans are also reassembled at this location.
Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC invested 500 million U.S. dollars in the construction of a new Sprinter production plant in addition to an expansion of the previous assembly operations. In September 2018, MBV officially opened its new plant, located next to existing operations in the North Charleston area. The MBV facility will provide up to 1,300 jobs by the end of the decade and is expected to create at least 600 additional jobs in the region through its suppliers.
More than 130,000 Sprinters have been assembled in North Charleston and delivered to destinations in the U.S. since 2006. The U.S. is now the second largest market for Sprinter vans, after Germany.
