Clinical Nurse Leader- Acute Care Services (1800 unit)
Full Time, FTE: 1

Job Summary:

  1. The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) is a nurse generalist prepared at the Master’s degree level. The impetus of the CNL role is knowing the needs of the patient, increasing communication, and facilitating lateral integration of care to improve patient outcomes.
  2. The CNL has specialized knowledge in horizontal leadership and is accountable for the management of care and the care environment.
  3. In addition to generalist preparation in nursing with enhanced clinical skills, the CNL is primarily unit or setting based and is responsible for a specified cohort of patients.
  4. Collaborates with the Director and Manager of the assigned work area to determine the focused patient cohort they will be overseeing.  This patient cohort can change periodically based on clinical outcomes that need focused attention and the setting’s population and complexity. 
  5. Accountable for patient safety and quality outcomes and the cohort of patients must be adapted to the setting.
  6. In his or her day to day practice, the CNL develops an overall view of patients, families and caregivers and establishes strong partnerships with them to deliver optimal care.
  7. Has 24-hour accountability for the clinical outcomes and performance improvement initiatives at the unit or setting area for the assigned cohort of patients. 


  1. Master’s degree in nursing required.   

Licensure and Certification: 

  1. Current unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse in the state of California. 
  2. Certification as a clinical nurse leader preferred. Must be eligible to sit for the national CNL exam and have attained certification within 3 months of hire..  
  3. Current AHA or equivalent BLS and ACLS certification required. 
  4. National specialty certification in critical care nursing preferred.   

Experience, Knowledge and Skills: 

  1. A minimum of three year’s of related clinical experience in progressive care or Telemetry nursing required. 
  2. Demonstrated competence in area of clinical responsibility;
  3. Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skills in providing care for adult patients in appropriate age groups:  young adult through geriatric. 
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. 
  5. Possesses leadership ability and high professional standards. 
  6. Must be well organized, be able to set priorities, work independently, and an effective team member.
  7. Word processing skills required,
  8. Statistical and data management skills preferred.

Will require some shift flex to include occasional evening, night or weekend rotation.
