Director, Health Information Management

Job Summary:

Responsible to the Senior Director, Revenue Cycle Management.  Overall responsibility for management of patient information to support clinical and financial processes.  Directs the activities of the Health Information Management (HIM) departments at NorthBay Medical Center and VacaValley Hospital including Green Valley Administration Center and associated offices.  Acts as a primary coordinator of activities relating to the design, maintenance and monitoring of quality information within patients longitudinal electronic health record.  Delegated responsibility for ensuring that all departments, including those not directly under own management control, comply with system policies and procedures governing privacy, confidentiality and quality of the medical record.  Provides leadership to organization managers in managing the transition from a paper to electronic record. Collaborates with managers to establish standards for data quality and clinical documentation.  Responsible for identifying and implementing performance improvement initiatives to promote and facilitate the use of health information for patient care, compliance, utilization management, research and education, reimbursement, audits and in legal proceedings.  Facilitates effective communications and provides health information leadership consistent with system goals and values.  Coordinates operations with other NorthBay Healthcare System departments as pertinent to compliance with Title 22, The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, EMTALA, CMS Audits and other regulatory agencies.  Responsible for system compliance with patient health information management directives in Title 22 and Joint Commission standards. 


  1. Bachelor’s Degree required.  Master’s Degree preferred. 

Licensure and Certifications:

  1. Current RHIA  required.

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:

  1. Has at least 5 years (over 7 years preferred) of progressively responsible health information management experience in positions of increasing complexity and responsibility and has functioned in a management capacity in a complex hospital environment. 
  2. Extensive knowledge of health record management and reimbursement principles. 
  3. Knowledgeable of federal and state compliance regulations, HIPAA, Title 22, The Joint Commission regulations and CMS Audit guidelines. 
  4. Experience with hospital information system implementations.  Knowledge of Cerner Millennium applications pertinent to health information management and computerized data repository functions preferred. 
  5. Experience with an electronic health record required. 
  6. Experience with computerized HIM, Encoder and data repository functions. 
  7. Fluent in project management, change management and process improvement methods. 
  8. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.   
  9. Demonstrated facilitation, conflict resolution, presentation and problem-solving skills.
