Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Manager, Coding & Data Quality is responsible for the coding and abstracting of medical records diagnosis and procedures for inpatient and outpatient cases. Classification systems used include ICD-10-CM and CPT, HCPCS, including modifiers.  Assigns reimbursement methodology (DRG or APC) with the assistance of an encoder and computer assisted coding.  All work carried out in accordance with the rules, regulations and coding conventions of the American Hospital Association (Coding Clinic), ICD, CMS, OSHPD, and NorthBay Healthcare coding guidelines.  Abstracts demographic and physician data to meet both internal and regulatory requirements for reporting utilizing the hospital’s abstracting system.  Ability to understand the clinical content of the health record and utilize an electronic health record to perform job duties.


  1. High School diploma or equivalent. 


  1. Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).


  1. 2 years continuous ICD10 /CPT coding and abstracting experience in an acute care setting within the last 5 years.  1-2 years inpatient coding experience preferred.
  2. Experience with an encoder & CAC system preferred.


  1. Demonstrated knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease process, reimbursement methodologies (DRGs, HCCs, APCs), and the conventions, rules and guidelines for current coding classification (ICD10-CM, CPT and HCPCS).
  2. Demonstrated understanding of the clinical content of a health record.
  3. Requires the knowledge of business use of computer hardware and software.
  4. Microsoft Office: Email, Word, Excel.

This position is remote and includes weekends.
