NICU Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist-Women and Children’s Services

Job Summary:

  1. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), also known as a Clinical Practice Manager (CPM) is a Registered Nurse who manages the clinical and educational resources and care standards for a specific patient population.
  2. The CNS/CPM is a member of the Chief Nursing Officer's leadership team and a member of the Advanced Practice Nurses Group.
  3. Participates in the development of evidence based care delivery systems and clinical practice programs. The Manager's role, along with other members of the management team, is to promote the provision of effective, high quality patient care to all patients. The following responsibilities are included: oversight of clinical nursing practice and patient care delivery, development of personnel, compliance with regulatory and professional standards, fostering of interdisciplinary, collaborative relationships and is accountable for bringing innovative ideas from and to the bedside. 
  4. The CNS/CPM will seek and provide educational programs for staff which are pertinent to the patient population served.
  5. Works collaboratively with the Advanced Practice Nurses, Learning and Leadership Team members, and Nursing Management to develop and validate the clinical competency of staff. Also works with physicians in order to establish a collegial and interdisciplinary patient care environment.
  6. Is an independent consultant on clinical care issues for patients, families, staff physicians and other departments.
  7. The CNS/CPM will be responsible for facilitating and managing special projects as assigned.

Education:

  1. Graduate of an accredited nursing program with a Master of Science in Nursing degree.

Licensure and Certification:

  1. Current unencumbered California RN license required
  2. Clinical Nurse Specialist Certification required
  3. Certification by the National Certification Corporation (NCC) required
  4. Certification in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing from a recognized accrediting organization is required within one year of hire.
  5. Current AHA or equivalent BLS and NRP certifications required

 Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

  1. Minimum of three (3) years of recent experience in acute care neonatal nursing, of which at least 1 year in a facility with a NICU that is equivalent to a regional or community NICU.
  2. 3-5 years of education or clinical nurse specialist experience with increasing scope of responsibility preferred.
  3. Knowledge of regulatory processes required (BRN, ANA, TJC,CCS and Title 22)
  4. Demonstrates ability to evaluate patient’s physical and emotional status. 
  5. Demonstrates ability to provide patient care based on age-related needs. 
  6. Demonstrates current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for patient in the following age groups: Neonatal, Pediatric, Adolescent, and Adult. 
  7. Demonstrates ability to clearly set behavioral limits. 
  8. Excellent communication skills with patients, professional staff and support staff.
