Nurse Practitioner, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery

Full Time, FTE: 1; 
Cardiothoracic Surgery
Fairfield, CA

Job Summary:

The Nurse Practitioner will provide and manage patient care through physical assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of assigned patients.  They will conduct initial assessments, history and physicals, performs procedures as privileged, prepares patients for discharge, and dictates History and Physicals, Progress Notes, and Discharge Summaries.  Further responsibilities include patient teaching and discharge planning, consultation liaison with the hospital, and staff education.  The Nurse Practitioner’s primary responsibility will also follow patients in the inpatient setting which are assigned to the Heart and Vascular surgical team.  Performs focused physical exams as needed, orders diagnostic tests, cardiothoracic standardized procedures, referrals and establishes/confirms diagnosis. Additionally, the Nurse Practitioner prescribes medications, instructs patients and, if requested by patient, their significant other about medical conditions, medications and treatment.  Provides continuity for patients seen by the cardiothoracic & vascular surgeon.  Collaborates with the patient’s primary care provider, as needed.


  1.  Master’s degree, or higher, in an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program.

Licensure and Certifications: 

  1. Current and unrestricted California licensure as a Nurse Practitioner required. 
    Board Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner required. 
  2. American Heart Association or equivalent Basic Life Support and ACLS required.  
    Experience, Knowledge and Skills:
  3. Three to five years’ experience in specialty area. 
  4. Also experience in professional/technical role requiring progressive increase in responsibility, required. 
  5. Demonstrated leadership skills and previous supervisor experience required.
  6. Ability to use computer, Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word), multi-line phone, Cerner experience preferred.
  7. Maintains a current Furnishing Number for medications.
  8. Maintains a current DEA license for schedule 2 drugs and above.
