Job Summary:

  1. The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) has the responsibility,  accountability, and the authority to deliver safe, effective, quality, excellent nursing care according to the philosophy and goals/objectives of the Department of Nursing. 
  2. Utilizing the Jean Watson’s Theory of Caring, Relationship Based Care, and NorthBay’s professional nursing practice model to assess, plans, implements, and evaluate care for all patients assigned to his/her care. 
  3. Makes determinations regarding the progress of the patient toward goals and utilizes a therapeutic professional relationship with the patient/ family and interdisciplinary team to facilitate the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of health. 
  4. Functions as a first assistant during surgical incision, excision, and repair of pathology throughout the perioperative period on procedures for which privileges have been granted. 
  5. Care is provided according to specific physiologic, developmental and psycho-social needs of the patient. 
  6. Supports the mission, vision, values and expectations of excellence of the organization.              


Education:

  1. Graduate from an accredited school of professional registered nursing, BSN preferred.  
  1. BSN required by January 1, 2020, unless grandfathered as outlined in March 2014 letter sent to employees.

Licensure/Credentials: 

  1. Current unrestricted California RN license required. 
  2. Certified Nurse Operating Room required.
  3. Certification by a national certification board-certified Registered
    Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) preferred. 
  4. Current AHA or equivalent BLS and ACLS certification required.

Experience, Knowledge and Skills: 

  1. Two (2) years’ experience as an RN in the operating room. 
  2. Previous experience in caring for cardiovascular patients preferred. 
  3. Successful completion of didactic university based course in first assisting required. 
  4. Successful completion of endoscopic vein/artery harvesting course preferred.
  5. Demonstrates ability to evaluate patient’s physical and emotional status. 
  6. Demonstrates ability to provide patient care based on age-related needs.
  7. Demonstrates current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for patients in the following age groups: Pediatric, Adult, and Geriatric. 
  8. Knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, surgical technique, wound healing, suture materials, physical assessment, and the nursing process.
  9. Excellent communication skills with patients, professional staff, and support staff.

Shift Hours: as needed by the Department Call requirement for CVOR, Labor and Delivery, Trauma, Surgery. Stand-by and callback availability required. Must be available o perform job duties at both NorthBay and VacaValley campus.
