This position is responsible for reviewing project specifications; conferring with customer and engineers concerning assistance required to collect data and develop projects from initial stages to final engineered pipeline projects.  Tasks include preparing plans, evaluating of field conditions, field verifications, design changes, and reports, including client revenue and cost projections.  Designers survey project sites to obtain and analyze topographical details of sites, using maps and surveying equipment. Drafts detailed dimensional drawings including at times two-line and 3D drawings as required for completion of gas pipeline and associated projects.

Summary
This position is responsible for reviewing project specifications; conferring with customers and engineers concerning specifications required to collect data and develop projects from initial stages to final engineered pipeline projects.  Tasks include coordinating project related tasks with drafters, preparing plans in accordance with client and local and state specifications, on site evaluation of field conditions and existing structures and easements,  field verifications, design changes, and reports, including client revenue and cost  projections. Senior Designers survey project sites to obtain and analyze topographical details of sites, using maps and surveying equipment. Drafts detailed dimensional drawings including using independent judgment to determine the required elevations, CAD standards, detail of view for plans, and two-line and 3D drawings as required for determining the placement and completion of gas pipeline and associated projects.  Inspects construction sites and obtain and evaluate municipality easements, standards for piping, and existing structures to determine placement of piping, to ensure conformance of site to design specifications, and in accordance with local, OSHA, and building ordinances and standards including any applicable FERC standards.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conducting field site visits to gather data and to determine the project plan development.
  • Determining and calculating lay out rights-of-way and/or street dimensions and angles.
  • Work closely with Project Manager and assist in determining the required drafters and designers for a particular project and distributes the work to those drafters and designers.
  • Coordinates, supervises and instructs drafters in the completion of basic drafting portions of the projects.
  • Re-formulate drafter’s initial drawings to meet customer and project specifications.
  • Responsible for coordinating the mechanical, electrical, and structural design aspects of the project.
  • Determine placement of piping, increments, and type of piping and materials in accordance with client requirements and local, state and federal standards.
  • Uses independent discretion and judgment in constructing dimensional relationship of one part to another and a relationship of various parts to entire project, utilizing knowledge of engineering practices and mathematics.
  • Creating a preliminary or final sketch of proposed drawing, using computer-assisted design/drafting equipment.
  • Applying knowledge and experience within the gas industry, including applicable standards to determine the design plans enabling the construction of gas facilities in a civil or mechanical environment.
  • Extracting data imported from a ground survey and determine the contour drawings to be used for soil erosion and sediment control drawings.
  • Designing concrete and steel supports, including above and below-ground supports, as they relate to supporting pipe in the gas pipeline industry and determine placement based on standards and any existing structures.
  • Modifying drawings as required by customer and/or existing structures, pipelines, and easements.
  • Determining whether existing piping on the site needs to be replaced or relocated due to existing structures and easements.
  • Evaluates and determines placement of piping and other structures (i.e. if the piping should be placed under roadways, etc. in evaluating current utilities on the site, easements, and local requirements.
  • Creating as-build drawings upon completion of project.
  • Performing miscellaneous job-related duties as necessary.

Requirements

  • An Associate of Applied Science degree (AAS) in Design and Drafting Technology.
  • Strong working knowledge of AutoCad or Microstation software.
  • Ten years prior experience preferred in civil design in the gas pipeline industry.
  • Ability to perform civil design drafting in a 3D environment is a plus.
  • Knowledge of SmallWorld and/or ESRI GIS platforms is a plus.
  • Strong work ethic with desire to work in a production environment.
  • Authorization to work in the US without restriction.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, and to attend meetings at various sites within and away from the Firm.
  • Must also be able to work at a desk for long periods of time (2-3 hours).
  • Strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen.
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
