Robert Half Finance & Accounting are currently supporting the prestigious University of Birmingham, with their recruitment of a Deputy Director of Finance - Projects.

The University of Birmingham is the 4th largest University in the United Kingdom and one of the top 100 Universities in the World. It is a member of the highly respected Russell Group and continues to attract some of the very best minds from both the UK and overseas. This is a brand new position within the University, created to support the business following the new financial and HR Oracle Fusion system implemented in 2019.

Role

  • Work with the Finance Director, the other Deputy Director of Finance and internal customers to define, develop and deliver an effective service to the University, ensuring changes are made as appropriate for improvement, simplification and development across the finance function and users.
  • Ensure there is an integrated approach to managing relationships with key stakeholders across the University - ensuring services are defined and developed with the end user in mind whilst also heavily influencing changes to existing and disparate processes.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of strategy for Finance.
  • Supporting cultural change by providing challenge, direction and project delivery as agreed with the Finance Director and senior leadership team. This role is about influencing rather than managing people.
  • Ensuring that staff within Finance understand the University's strategy, the role finance play by developing its financial framework which are translated into clear objectives and can support the delivery of the financial elements of strategy across all business areas.
  • Lead the development and operations of standard operating procedures by working closely with staff across the finance function and the broader University developing process maps and key performance targets and working with FLG to ensure these are reviewed and delivered in all areas.
  • Identifying areas across Finance that require additional resilience or support and devising ways of delivering this from within existing resources.
  • Contribute to system and process development in areas as requested, which may include involvement in decision making and governance arrangements.
  • Utilise resources available within Finance and the wider University to support the change agenda and drive enhanced financial support and operations across the teams which meets user needs whilst delivering consistency and efficiency
  • Driving the continuous improvement agenda through project work and FLG engagement.
  • Managing the strategy and budget cycle (Compact) for Finance
  • Ensuring there are effective and consistent business planning methodologies within Finance for assessing new University activities
  • Providing support to new initiatives and projects on a financial and strategic basis.
  • Working closely with the Training and Communications Officer to derive appropriate strategies for these areas.
  • Driving the preparation for and actions from the Vice Chancellor's integrated review of Finance in 2020.

Profile

  • A strong working knowledge of structures, policies and procedures (not necessarily financial ones), having experience of simplification of these.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably with an accountancy related qualification.
  • Experience of working at a senior level in a large and complex organisation.
  • Strong influencing skills
  • The ability to analyse complex data, draw conclusions from it, use it to inform judgements and to communicate the output to a diverse range of audiences.
  • Has proven expertise in process simplification; efficiency delivery or cost savings which can be transferred to other environments.
  • Approachable, balanced in view and considered in the evaluation of issues.
  • Is prepared to listen to alternative views on proposals/solutions to problems, and act on good advice to make informed decisions.
  • Has an ability to convert strategy into best operational practice.
  • Able to convey complex and technical information authoritatively and clearly to a diverse audience including Governors, senior executives, peers, direct reports and auditors.
  • Has the capability to adapt management style
  • Confidence and ability to operate autonomously and with appropriate authority.
  • The ability to lead, manage and motivate a large (up to 100) team, empowering staff to deliver.
  • Ability to anticipate, plan and promote change, taking a lead role in driving change.
  • Appreciation of and empathy with the HE sector and its strategic challenges and environment.
  • The intellectual depth to command respect amongst academic colleagues and the personal qualities to work effectively in partnership with academic staff, including at a senior level.
  • A resilient and pragmatic problem solver who can fit into a changing environment and quickly add value to the operational aspects of Finance.

Salary & Benefits

A base salary circa £80,000 - £100,000 is offered + pension, flexible working, generous holidays
