HERE’S THE JOB DESCRIPTION:
Title: Business Development Specialist 
Rate: DOE
Location: Berkeley, CA 94720
Duration: 3 month contract with possible extension

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • Reporting to the Chief Technology Transfer Officer (CTTO) in the Intellectual Property Office (IPO), the Business Development Specialist brings Berkeley Lab’s science solutions to the world by managing and commercializing the intellectual property (IP) portfolio of assigned research divisions.
  • This role is responsible for advising all Berkeley Lab employees (researchers, administrators, leadership, etc.) on matters relating to managing and commercializing IP, including but not limited to supporting entrepreneurial opportunities, advising on industry collaboration, and providing regular updates on status and progress of management and commercialization efforts.
  • This role interacts with professionals with diverse skill sets, including researchers, patent attorneys, contracting professionals, and business development professionals.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Management of Intellectual Property (40%)

This role manages the IP portfolio of assigned research divisions by evaluating and prioritizing new and existing technologies, and developing and implementing appropriate IP strategies:

  • Reviewing technology disclosures and related information to identify critical technology, market, and IP issues;
  • Meeting with researchers to better understand critical technical, market, and IP issues, and develop hypotheses to evaluate;
  • Evaluating technical, market, and IP hypotheses by conducting independent research and engaging industry wherever possible
    • Technical and market hypotheses could relate to product-market fit (potential applications, relative advantages and disadvantages, etc.), market dynamics (market size and location, profitability, etc.), and go-to-market strategy (technical milestones, funding paths, etc.); and
    • IP hypotheses could relate to ownership and encumbrances, patentability and scope (likelihood of issuance, breadth and type of claims, etc.), and enforceability and licensability;
  • Prioritizing technologies according to commercial and/or programmatic potential based on the results of hypothesis testing
  • Developing appropriate IP strategies to maximize impact while managing costs and overhead; and
  • Collaborating with patent attorneys to implement IP strategies.
    Database upkeep is critical to aforementioned essential duties and responsibilities.

40% Develop and Manage Licensing with Industry
This role commercializes the IP portfolio of assigned research divisions by managing the licensing life cycle:

  • Identifying potential licensees by inbound marketing including drafting and editing webpages, and fielding emails and calls;
  • Jointly developing satisfactory commercialization plans in collaboration with potential licensees, for example agreeing on intended product/services and go-to-market strategies
  • Negotiating business terms, including license scopes and financial terms, with potential licensees
  • Collaborating with contracting professionals to negotiate legal terms with potential licensees and execute full license; and
  • Ensuring licensees comply with licensing obligations by maintaining relationships with licensees and measuring and promoting compliance.
    Database upkeep is critical to aforementioned essential duties and responsibilities.

Other Duties (20%)

  • This role advises all Berkeley Lab employees (researchers, administrators, leadership, etc.) on all matters relating to managing and commercializing IP, including but not limited to supporting entrepreneurial opportunities, advising on industry collaboration issues, and providing regular updates on status and progress of management and commercialization efforts.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Essential:
Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences with M.B.A. or 5+ years of experience in business development, or advanced degree in the biological sciences with 2+ years of experience in business development;
  • Experience with or demonstrated capability to learn IP subject matter, including IP law, IP transactions, and IP portfolio management;
  • Computer literacy, including web-based research and use of intellectual property databases and office productivity software.

    • Visual, oral, and written communications;
    • Conferences, group meetings, 1-on-1s;
    • Berkeley Lab, University of California, Department of Energy, Industry;
  • Ability to quickly understand technologies, relevant industries and markets, and potential applications;
  • Ability to develop strategies and goals, organize work toward those strategies and goals, and solve problems that might be encountered in executing work
  • Excellent negotiation and consensus-building skills;

Marginal: 

  • Experience with University of California and Department of Energy policies regarding intellectual property and related matters.
  • Project management experience.
