HERE’S THE JOB DESCRIPTION:
Title: Compensation Consultant 
Pay: DOE
Location: Berkeley, CA 94720
Duration: 6 month contract with possible extension

POSITION SUMMARY

  • Reporting to the Compensation Manager, this position plays an integral role in designing, implementing and communicating various compensation programs and providing excellent client facing compensation support. 
  • This includes, but is not limited to, partnering with the HR Team members to assess and design compensation programs and providing on-going recommendations for continuous process improvement.
  • This position will be expected to function independently with little to no oversight and own decisions and processes that have a Lab-wide impact.
  • He/She will be expected to act as a consultant to management providing strategic approaches to Compensation design and implementation. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acts as a consultant to management by providing strategic approaches to Compensation design and implementation.  Provides recommendations to strategic issues based upon extensive training, knowledge, and experience in Compensation. 
  • Leads the build and maintenance of job leveling and pay structures throughout the Lab.
  • Perform analytical studies in a variety of compensation areas, such as competitive pay practices, and emerging trends. Benchmark positions for evaluation against market.
  • Partner with HR Division Partners and leadership to support business compensation initiatives, reorganizations, communications, and strategy.
  • Conduct job analysis and review job descriptions for appropriateness and confirmation of FLSA classifications.
  • Partner with Employee Labor Relations in serving as the Lab’s compensation representative in union negotiations and ensure that the necessary approvals from Lab management, DOE, and UCOP are processed.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of both federal and state wage and hour laws including FLSA to ensure compensation programs, practices and policies comply with local, state and federal laws.
  • Responsible for leading multi-functional teams in the completion of the most complex Compensation projects.  Requires representing the team’s findings and recommendations to Laboratory senior management
  • Lead and own compensation projects as needed.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

I.          Education & Experience

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • 12 or more years of experience in compensation with extensive experience as a compensation consultant and/or subject matter expert to management

Preferred

  • Graduate level degree in Business Administration or Human Resources

II.        Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Required

  • Ability to use Excel to develop advanced budget models and create templates for use in conducting analyses. Must be able to use advanced Excel functionality and formulas including but not limited vlookups; hlookups; array formulas; nested formulas;
  • Extensive progressively responsible experience developing and implementing base pay and variable compensation programs, market pricing (both benchmark and maturity curves), job analysis and evaluation, and pay structure design.
  • Extensive experience communicating compensation programs to management and employees.
  • Knowledge of compensation theory and practices and associated labor laws.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of UC pay policies
  • Experience working with Peoplesoft 9.2 & AskUs

III.       Certificates & Licenses

Preferred

  • Certified Compensational Professional (CCP) designation from WorldatWork.
