Position Title: Maintenance Technician 3 (Entry level) 
Rate: $15.00/HR 
Location: Irvine, CA 92614
Duration: Long term/indefinite + possible hire
First shift position, Monday through Friday, often work on Saturday and overtime as needed. 

Must have previous welding experience 


This is an entry-level position into the maintenance technician role. Provides general and diverse maintenance support associated with industrial equipment and facilities upkeep. Learns and performs work utilizing trade skills including machining, sheet metal, pipefitting, basic electrical, and welding. Also provides general assistance in the maintenance and repair of manufacturing equipment, buildings, grounds, and exterior structures.


  1. Provides general maintenance assistance, including on-the-job learning as applicable, utilizing the following trade skills: machining, sheet metal, and pipefitting, basic electrical, welding, and painting.
  2. Supports the facilities department on building and grounds maintenance and repair, manufacturing equipment repair, equipment installation and modifications, and special projects.
  3. Operates portable power tools, and the set-up and operation of shop equipment. Utilizes hand tools as needed.
  4. Some work may require adhering to close tolerances and the use of standard or specialized measuring and testing instruments. Requires an understanding of basic Math including working knowledge of fractions and decimals.
  5. Supports routine operational testing and adjustments of facility equipment. Participates in preventative and repair maintenance activities (MRO). May require maintaining equipment operating logs and properly documenting activity while on duty.
  6. Production machinery repair work involves maintaining numerous types of fixed and semi-fixed production machinery such as custom-built industrial machines used in the manufacture of all products.
  7. Pipefitting includes modifying and repairing new and existing piping systems and equipment such as hydraulic systems, expansion tanks, condensation, vacuum, and circulating pumps.
  8. Utility systems repair work includes maintaining and repairing utility systems such as heating and/or air conditioning equipment (HVAC) and other facility infrastructure and quality control equipment.
  9. Assist sheet metal work includes forming, joining, assembling, and installing items and systems such as heating, air-conditioning and ventilating pipes, conduits, and other items and systems which have combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves and planes.
  10. Assist machining work involves repairing and rebuilding items utilizing raw stock of metal alloys, stainless steel, aluminum, rubber, plastics, and nylon. Utilizes power machine shop equipment and hand tools as needed.
  11. Assist welding involves working with all types of commonly used metals and alloys of various sizes, shapes, and thicknesses. Includes using both wire-welding and helium/oxy tank welding equipment.
  12. Cross train in Janitorial duties to cover during emergency.
  13. Performs job duties and obtains training in accordance with ISO procedures.
  14. Follows safety rules and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
  15. Exhibits exemplary conduct at all times in dealing with other Newport employees, and any outside contacts. Contributes to a healthy, positive, and safe environment. Promotes self as a team member.
  16. May be assigned, and be expected to perform to acceptable standards, any relevant related duties as required by management.

A minimum high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.  Recommended is 3 to 5 years-related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Specialized Knowledge/skills/abilities for performance of job:

Experience with manufacturing is required.  Chemical or converting industry experience is a plus.  Multi-lingual skills in Japanese and /or Spanish are a plus.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee will periodically work in a factory environment and periodically be around heavy industrial machinery that compounds hot melt resin systems from a variety of hot melt adhesive formulations, (resins, liquids, solids, powders etc.) as well as processes that coat this into film products  and/or coat these compounded resins onto fibers and/or fiber web, and the employee at times may be required to utilize a variety of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as steel-toed safety shoes, eye protection, hard hat, dust masks and or plastic gloves to minimize exposure to industrial hazards. The employee is occasionally exposed to temperatures of 90 degrees F or above as well as 10 degrees F or below; and a noise level up to 85 decibels. Employee/Temp Employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crouch or climb stairs. 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
