Hours: Full-time, 40 hrs/wk
Main Clinic

Job Summary/Position Objective: Supports routine duties and responsibilities required to deliver clinical laboratory testing; includes pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical processes to support quality patient care. Monitors and manages processes associated with electronic patient orders and results reporting thru the Laboratory Information System and related electronic interfaces.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

1.      This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a biological, physical, chemical science, or Medical Laboratory Science; and, clinical laboratory experience in hematology, chemistry, immunochemistry, microbiology and urinalysis.

2.      Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) or equivalent.

3.      Skill in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion, and decision-making.

4.      Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with coworkers, clinic staff, physicians, and the public.

5.      Ability to plan, prioritize, and organize workload to meet established completion dates.

6.      Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a broad range of individuals and personality types.

7.      Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and limitations of testing systems.

8.      Knowledge of safety hazards and precautions to establish and promote a safe work environment.

9.      Knowledge of Federal and State Regulatory Compliance and Inspection Criteria; CLIA ’88, OSHA.

10.  Working knowledge of software used for development of documents, logs, spreadsheets; along with, Electronic Health Record and Laboratory Information System.

11.  Supports all routine duties of Medical Laboratory Scientist; including,  

·         Skills and knowledge to support performing a full range of laboratory testing in a highly complex testing environment. .

·         Ability to interpret quality control results and take corrective action as needed.

·         Ability to accurately perform laboratory testing at a pace to support prescribed turnaround times.

·         Ability to work independently; recognize problems and take action. Actively communicate problems/ suggested resolution to Director of Laboratory Services; and/or, vendor representative, etc.

·         Ability to operate testing instrumentation, including use of the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Electronic Health Record (EHR).

·         Ability to work all shifts, regardless of the day of the week.

·         Assists with the management of supply and reagent inventory to support timely patient care.

·         Supports assigned hours and weekend rotation.

Job Requirements


Essential Functions: 

Ø  Performs clinical laboratory testing and associated instrument maintenance and trouble shooting.

Ø  Coordinate general processes required to comply with clinic, governmental and other regulatory standards.

Ø  Monitors and manages Laboratory Information System (Orchard Harvest) and related interfaced systems. Activities focus on:

o   Supports build needs for laboratory orders, results management

o   Monitors and manages related Tables to manage testing and related laboratory processes; e.g., sample management and handling, temperature requirements, LOINC codes, instrument interfaces

o   Works within LIS Browsers to provide requested data reports for quality management and utilization.

o   Works with EHR Clinical Builder to map orders/ results

o   Works with Reference Lab(s) to identify and resolve data failures to support timely reporting of patient results.

o   Prepares training and competency materials for Laboratory Staff for LIS training.

o   Works with Orchard Technical Support to resolve and/or, improve system issues

o   Prepares LIS reports as requested.

o   Manages personnel and location tables; support electronic delivery of patient results.

Ø  Participates in continuing education and the development of new skills.

Ø  Facilitates resolution of technical issues and concerns in the absence of the Director of Laboratory Services.

Ø  Attend required meetings and participate in committees as requested. Meetings include but are not limited to, weekly meetings with the Director of Laboratory Services, Laboratory Coordinators and Weekly Tech Updates.
