Hours: Full-time, M-F, 8-5

Job Summary/Position Objective: Supports routine duties and responsibilities required to deliver clinical laboratory testing; includes pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical processes to support quality patient care. Oversees technical and administrative activities to maintain compliance with applicable regulatory guidelines.  Supports department Quality Control/ Quality Assurance program; major focus is management of proficiency program and competency tracking to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of quality health care for our patients.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

1.      This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a biological, physical, chemical science, or Medical Technology; and, 5 years of clinical laboratory experience in hematology, chemistry, immunochemistry, microbiology and urinalysis.

2.      Certification as a medical technologist (ASCP or equivalent) or Medical Laboratory Scientist.

3.      Skill in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion, and decision-making.

4.      Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff, physicians, and the public.

5.      Ability to plan, prioritize, organize and direct the work of others.

6.      Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

7.      Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and limitations of testing systems.

8.      Knowledge of safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.

9.      Knowledge of Federal and State Regulatory Compliance and Inspection Criteria; CLIA ’88, OSHA.



Essential Functions: 

1.      Assists with oversight of clinical laboratory testing and associated instrument maintenance and trouble shooting.

2.      Coordinate general processes required to comply with technical supervision of testing staff in accordance with clinic, governmental and other regulatory standards.

3.      Oversees technical component of Laboratory’s Quality Assurance Program and related Quality Control processes. Specifically;

a.       Assures QC testing performed in compliance with manufacturer’s guidelines and local, state and federal regulations.

b.      Assures completion of scheduled QC and monthly review of QC data.  Able to identify shifts and trends to work with technical staff to develop and oversee corrective action.

c.       Maintains tracking system to monitor accuracy and compliance with regulatory reporting criteria specific to pre analytical, analytical and post-analytical processes.

d.      Manages proficiency testing program; assigns and distributes samples, assures completion of testing in accordance with manufacturer’s / Salem Clinic procedures and timely reporting to support program requirements.

e.       Prepare statistical and administrative reports as requested to support department’s Quality Assessment Program

f.       Provide routine updates to Director of Laboratory Services to assist with management of Quality Assurance Program

4.      Manages activities to support competency assessment for technical staff; including,

a.       Work with technologists to formalize trainer references and competency assessment.

b.      Assures staff are scheduled for formal training and do not function independently until all require

c.       competency activities are completed and documented.

d.      Maintain tracking system to support scheduling of six month/ competency assessment.

Job Requirements

5.      Oversee and/or assist with training and orientation of technical personnel.  Coordinate timely completion of new hire orientation using defined checklist and competency assessment.   

6.      Assists with department’s inventory tracking and order system. Ensure efficient ordering and stocking of supplies for the department by coordinating scheduled activities with assigned staff. Review and provide justification for special orders prior to submitting to Director of Laboratory Services. 

7.      Promote continuing education for technical staff and the development of new skills. Support the development of in-service education program; schedule and arranges continuing education session(s) in support of department’s Quality Assessment Program.

8.      Conduct regularly scheduled site visits at satellite facilities; assist with record review, compliance activities, and assist in addressing routine operational issues.

9.      Directs technical issues and concerns in the absence of the Director of Laboratory Services.

10.  Attend required meetings and participate in committees as requested. Meetings include but are not limited to, weekly meetings with the Director of Laboratory Services, scheduled meetings with Laboratory Assistant Leadership and monthly department meetings.
