POSITION:  Clinical Therapist

POSITION SUMMARY

Provide individual, group and family therapy to an assigned caseload of students as prescribed by Auldern Academy. Provides updates to family and referring professionals; advocates for the needs of the student and the family. Intervene in crisis situations, advising and directing care of the student. Arrange area and home visits within the guidelines of Auldern Academy. Attend meeting as scheduled.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

  • Maintain confidentiality of records relating to students' treatment, sharing within Auldern on a 'need to know' basis only.
  • Assess student for risk of self-harm or other self-defeating behavior, advising other staff on appropriate interventions.
  • Encourage student to express their feelings and discuss what is happening in their lives, helping them to develop insight into themselves or their relationships both at Auldern and with their families.
  • Collect information about student through review of testing, interviews with previous therapists, observation, or family reports.
  • Counsel student, individually or in group sessions, to assist in overcoming dependencies, adjusting to life, or making necessary changes.
  • Guide students in the development of skills or strategies for dealing with their problems.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans based on clinical experience, knowledge and in accordance to Auldern Academy philosophy and practices.
  • Fill out and maintain student-related paperwork, including client diagnostic records, progress notes and Personal Growth Plan.
  • Prepare and maintain all required treatment records and reports, including student, family and referral source contacts.
  • Evaluate students' physical or mental condition, based on review of student information.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to perform clinical assessments or develop treatment plans, including coordinating goals with other departments on the Personal Growth Plan.
  • Refer student or family members to community resources or to specialists as necessary.
  • Act as student advocates to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations.
  • Modify treatment activities or approaches as needed to comply with changes in students' status in accordance to the Auldern Academy program.
  • Communicate with family members to assist them in understanding, dealing with, or supporting their child.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of counseling programs on students' progress in resolving identified problems and moving towards defined objectives, taking into consideration counseling, student life and academics.
  • Work with family and student to create transition plans for life after leaving Auldern Academy.
  • Communicate with families, referring professionals, parent coaches or other interested parties to exchange necessary information during the treatment process.
  • Plan, organize, or lead group and workshops with other clinicians to assist students in doing emotional work and building skills for the future.
  • Coordinate services with Sobriety Counselor for student in needs of substance abuse issues.
  • Meet with Psychiatrist and Nurse, discussing issues surrounding clients' use or need of medications.
  • Learn about new developments in counseling by reading professional literature, attending courses and seminars, or establishing and maintaining contact with other social service agencies.
  • Assist in the education of other employees about mental health issues and the handling of students.
  • Prepare and present pertinent topics for Parent Education days 3 times yearly.
  • Willingness to be flexible with scheduling in order to support students at graduation, parent weekends and participation in yearly off campus experiential educational outings.
  • Be on call therapist approximately one weekend per month.


SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education:  Master's Degree

Experience:  One to two years related experience

Computer Skills:  Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Certificates & Licenses:  NC State licensure such as LCSW, LCC or LPC; provisional maybe appropriate

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Auldern Academy is an accredited college preparatory, therapeutic boarding school for girls grades 9 - 12.  We provide a traditional academic environment along with group, individual, and family counseling services.  We utilize aspects of Positive Peer Culture and the relational approach to treatment planning; engaging the student and her family members as genuine partners to motivate the change process in our students and families.  We provide students with a structured daily environment that includes chores, a full academic day, therapy sessions, recreational activities and life skills.
