 POSITION:  Residential (Student) Life Counselor

Auldern Academy is a college preparatory, therapeutic boarding school for girls grades 9 - 12.  We provide a traditional academic environment along with group, individual, and family counseling services.  We utilize the Positive Peer Culture model at our school and provide students with a structured daily environment that includes chores, therapy sessions, recreational activities and life skills. 


Auldern Academy has immediate openings for Student Life or Residential Life Counselors.  Primary responsibility is to accomplish program objectives as delegated by the Director of Student Life and Executive Director. The goal is to ensure the safety, integrity and proper implementation of therapeutic programming. Assist in group counseling sessions, mediate disputes and problem solve as needed in the dorm, during activities both on and off campus. Coordinate and plan activities for students in the non-school hours. Order supplies and determine need for maintenance, repairs, and furnishings. May inspect rooms and maintain records of room standards. Work with the team to make appropriate room assignments. May assist residents with problem solving or refer them to counseling resources.

Job Duties:

  • Enforce rules, standards and regulations to ensure the smooth and orderly operation of dormitory.

  • Provide emergency first aid and summon medical assistance when necessary.

  • Mediate interpersonal problems between residents.

  • Move around facilities to ensure that residents and areas are safe and secure.

  • Observe students to detect and report or deal with unusual behavior.

  • Communicate with other staff to resolve problems with individual students.

  • Counsel students in the handling of issues such as family, social, and educational problems during the non-school hours.

  • Collaborate with Clinicians and Teachers to develop programs that address the needs of individual students.

  • Coordinate and oversee study halls implementing educational plans for students.

  • Work with team to develop behavior program plans for students to address issues.

  • Provide requested information on students' progress and the development of case plans.

  • Hold regular meetings with other Counselors and staff as assigned.

  • Supervise students' housekeeping work to ensure that it is done properly and up to standards.

  • Administer, coordinate, or recommend disciplinary and corrective actions such as Focused Reflection projects.

  • Confer with treatment team to better understand the backgrounds and needs of individual residents.

  • Answer telephones; respond to email and forward messages as needed.

  • Determine the need for facility maintenance and repair, and email the Maintenance Department with requests.

  • Compile student behavior information and communicate both the highlights and hot spots to other staff.

  • Plan and chaperone group-sponsored trips and social functions.

  • Implement appropriate consequences students who are unable to follow residence hall policies and procedures.

  • Provide transportation or escort for expeditions such as shopping trips or visits to doctors or dentists.

  • Order supplies for facilities.

  • Direct and participate in on- and off-campus recreational activities for students.

  • Accompany and supervise students during meals, noting participation in meals.

  • Sort and distribute mail.

  • Inventory, pack, and remove items left behind by former residents.

  • Supervise phone calls, email and internet use by students.


  • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in a Behavioral Science, Recreation or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.  (Or have equivalent work experience in the field working with youth)

  • Must be willing to learn and grow, be open to giving and receiving feedback, and be willing to be a vocal part of a team.  

  • Must have good judgment, strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail when providing documentation.
